Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Quote:
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer. .

Oh, wow- I hadn't seen that before now. Has a pope ever retired before?
God bless him- definitely a time for serious praying.

He looked so frail at the Christmas Mass.

I will be praying. I cannot imagine how hard it has been for him.

Thank you for posting that, Lindsay. I had not yet found it in his own words.

Totally shell-shocked household here. Very sad and lots of questions too. Everyone is now reading our papal history books - I think this is the first time in 6 centuries that a pope has resigned.

Lent is starting and we can pray for our beloved Papa and our Church.

I was very sad at first but now I am beginning to feel more thankful we've had him for those 8 years. He didn't expect the pontificate and was already quite old, so we can see the Holy Spirit guiding the Church and allowing us the last of his energies as our earthly leader. That said, I will be praying and reconsidering my Lenten sacrifices.

Definitely praying, here. I read about this somewhere else and needed to pop over here and be with people (at least virtually) who would feel as I do about this.

Here is a blog post by Jimmy Akin, whom I respect in his level headed approach to the Church.

He makes some good points with sound reason. One that resonate with me is number 8. As a person that has lived with chronic pain....the hardest part is dealing with people who done understand or who make judgments based on what they see.

I agree with Jimmy, if the Pope feels that this is necessary I *must* trust that he knows his health better than I do or better than I can see!

Nevertheless.....I am still sad.....

Praying the Holy Spirit Novena for Pope Benedict, his successor and the entire Church. Surely Pope Benedict is being led by the Holy Spirit to do whatever is best for the Church. May our Lord profoundly bless and guide him, and the entire Church hierarchy in the days ahead.

Perhaps our Lord was already preparing our family for this news when we went for Mass yesterday and no priest was available, due to a mixup in communications and the shortage of priests in our area ~ a very concrete reminder to pray for Church leaders, for all priests and especially for an increase in vocations to the priesthood.

Come Holy Spirit, renew the Church and the entire face of the earth.

Adding my prayers...I've been tearing up all morning, thinking of how much Pope Benedict has given to the Church he loves so much.
