Tonight dh realized that over $500 have been charged to our debit card from an internet company in California. It was 6 transactions to the same company in a matter of a few minutes.
I don't know what to do? We quickly canceled the cards via an 800 number on the back of our cards, but do we need a whole new bank account? We really don't need this stress.
Prayers appreciated!

You just cancel the cards through that 800 number and they send you a new one and pin. Takes 7-10 days and you must report the charges to your company and they will reimburse them to you. Your debit card should be a VISA or MC so it is protected from fraudulent charges. Sadly this happened to us twice last year.
Prayers for a quick turn around.

the debit card number doesn't give your checking account number so you don't need a whole new account just the cards.

Praying with empathy, Joann...we had a massive credit card theft issue to deal with last summer. It's never fun...but it's wonderful that your husband figured out what was going on so quickly!

Dear Joann, also praying with empathy...and you should get your money back from your credit card company. Unfortunately this happens a lot.

This is no fun, Joann, but it's also fairly easy to address. This happened to us just 2 weeks ago. You did good to cancel the cards. Call your bank this morning and there should be a form to fill out so that you can dispute and identify the fraudulent charges. (You should be able to get the form on their website, print it, fill it out and sign it and just drop it off at the bank.) Most banks reimburse your account for the fraudulent charges within a couple of days of receiving this form. You won't need a new bank account - but you will need new debit cards which the bank should take care of, too.
Sending prayers your way!

Should point out that this happened to us twice in a course of 6 months and I suspect that this was a paypal theft. I have one homeschooling online paypal account that is a monthly recurring one and from research apparently monthly automatic payment accounts are stored together in a separate file on the paypal server (than your traditional account) and are more easily hackable. So we were hacked twice in 2 months--both after my monthly payment was due ...so I solved it (hopefully!)by just writing a monthly check to the company and canceling the monthly paypal withdrawls. Apparently this is pretty common and it seems likely that this is how mine happened. Of course there are tons of ways you can get your debit number stolen so I may be wrong--all this computer stuff spins the head of this simple math teacher:)
