He committed suicide yesterday on his 50th birthday.
He was eight years older than me; I am the youngest of four. I never knew him well, but I know now that he had drug, alcohol, and depression troubles since high school. He married twice and divorced twice, seemed to never hold down a job or an address for long.
My poor mother feels terrible and blames herself "in a thousand different ways". (my father died 27 years ago after divorcing my mother) There will be a small private Catholic funeral rite next Monday (not a Mass) and then he will be cremated as he wished. I honestly don't know if my husband will foot the bill for me to travel there for the funeral (from MN to OK), especially since we have camping reservations on the North Shore next week, and given the entire dysfunctional situation and the family from which I come.
I am just praying to know what do to, wondering how to pray for such a lost soul, examining my own conscience as to what more I could have done personally (other than just being a quiet witness with my own life and choices), how to continue to raise a faithful family of my own since we sort of starting from scratch (but without pride and self-righteousness), and how to forgive my own parents for all of those unintentional parenting mistakes that I am sure were so common in the 70's. I am also a concerned about the whole "generational curse" issue.
It's just a hard time, saddening and maddening, and a difficult situation to share with anyone. I appreciate your prayers. I pray for all the intentions here even if I don't often leave a comment indicating that I do. Thank you.

Oh Dear Tracy,
I am so very sorry about this situation. We had a family member commit suicide years ago and I choose to really cling to the mercies of God. I am praying for you and the whole situation.
Thank you so much for sharing this burden with us so that we can pray.
Praying for peace and consolation for everyone involved.

I am so sorry for your loss, Tracy. I am praying for you and your family and especially your mother. That truly is a sword in her heart - mothers can't help but feel that pain deeply and personally. Hopefully she will find consolation and know that it is not her fault.
A friend of mine recently lost her mother, someone who was very tormented and away from the faith. She asked some of her close friends to join her in praying this particular prayer for her mother.
PRAYER TO THE HEART OF JESUS
O GENTLEST Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament,
ever consumed with burning love for the Poor captive Souls in Purgatory,
have mercy on the Soul of Thy departed servant.
Be not severe in Thy judgment, but some drops of Thy Precious Blood fall
upon the devouring flames and do Thou O Merciful Savior, send thy Angels to conduct
Thy departed servant to a place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen.

Dear Tracy, I'm so sorry for your family's loss. Praying for your brother's soul, for your mother and for your entire family. May our Lord's Divine Mercy bring comfort to all of you.
Here are two prayers that can be consoling at such a time as this:
Prayer for Healing the Family Tree
Rev. John H. Hampsch, CMF
Heavenly Father, I come before you as your child, in great need of your help; I have physical health needs, emotional needs, spiritual needs, and interpersonal needs. Many of my problems have been caused by my own failures, neglect and sinfulness, for which I humbly beg your forgiveness, Lord. But I also ask you to forgive the sins of my ancestors whose failures have left their effects on me in the form of unwanted tendencies, behavior patterns and defects in body, mind and spirit. Heal me, Lord, of all these disorders.
With your help I sincerely forgive everyone, especially living or dead members of my family tree, who have directly offended me or my loved ones in any way, or those whose sins have resulted in our present sufferings and disorders. In the name of your divine Son, Jesus, and in the power of his Holy Spirit, I ask you, Father, to deliver me and my entire family tree from the influence of the evil one. Free all living and dead members of my family tree, including those in adoptive relationships, and those in extended family relationships, from every contaminating form of bondage. By your loving concern for us, heavenly Father, and by the shed blood of your precious Son, Jesus, I beg you to extend your blessing to me and to all my living and deceased relatives. Heal every negative effect transmitted through all past generations, and prevent such negative effects in future generations of my family tree.
I symbolically place the cross of Jesus over the head of each person in my family tree, and between each generation; I ask you to let the cleansing blood of Jesus purify the bloodlines in my family lineage. Set your protective angels to encamp around us, and permit Archangel Raphael, the patron of healing, to administer your divine healing power to all of us, even in areas of genetic disability. Give special power to our family members' guardian angels to heal, protect, guide and encourage each of us in all our needs. Let your healing power be released at this very moment, and let it continue as long as your sovereignty permits.
In our family tree, Lord, replace all bondage with a holy bonding in family love. And let there be an ever-deeper bonding with you, Lord, by the Holy Spirit, to your Son, Jesus. Let the family of the Holy Trinity pervade our family with its tender, warm, loving presence, so that our family may recognize and manifest that love in all our relationships. All of our unknown needs we include with this petition that we pray in Jesus' precious Name. Amen.
+++++++++++++++
St. Joseph, Patron of family life, pray for us
The St. Gertrude Prayer
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
ETA: Please pray for a young lady who took her life yesterday. She was part of a circle of girls who have been involved in the same dance group for many years ~ prayers are needed for all these young women during this tragic, vulnerable time.

Thank you, everyone
I am printing the prayers out to take with me. Looks like I will be traveling alone, since we cannot find a sitter for our five children for 3-4 days.
My husband found one (and only one) place on the North Shore with campsite availability through Labor Day weekend, so our camping trip will be delayed, but not cancelled.
Please continue to pray for our family. Thank you so very much.

Tracy, I am so very sorry for your loss. Suicide is devastating ... so much hurt, so much needless blame. There have been suicides within my own extended family - nearly tearing pockets of family apart. I will be praying for you as you grieve, praying for your safe travels, and for the hearts in your family to heal.

My brother also committed suicide on March 1st of this year. It was awful. Thankfully, I talked to him just before he did it, and as soon as I got off the phone, I said a Divine Mercy Chaplet for him. He was still alive in the ambulance, but died at the hospital, so I know that the chaplet was just in time. Keep praying for him, and saying the Rosary and Chaplet. Also, I am a supporter/prayer of this https://sites.google.com/site/divinemercyforlostsouls/
It is a website for souls who have committed suicide. It helped a lot. The pain will be there for a while. You can PM me if you like to talk more about it. Bridget
