My younger sister went in for her first prenatal visit (third pregnancy) on the 18th and the doctor saw the baby on ultrasound, but there was no heartbeat. My sister was devastated, but nothing has happened yet and it's been almost two weeks. She is going in tomorrow for another ultrasound and then possibly will schedule a D and C. My question for advice is, morally speaking, are you supposed to wait until your body begins to reject the pregnancy before such a procedure? What if the doctor is mistaken? I don't personally believe he would be, he's a really good Christian doctor. I'm afraid that I have recommended that she schedule the procedure and that that may not have been good advice.
My prayer request is of course, for the soul of the baby, and for my sister's physical and emotional health. She doesn't want to believe that the new life within her is gone, especially because she's been wanting another little one for quite a long time.
Any little prayer or bit of advice you have would be very gratefully received!
God bless you ladies!
**Update - My sister went in Wednesday and they found that nothing was changed since her last ultrasound. Yesterday she had a D and C. God is so sweet, He gave this baby his own season, as my sister found out she was expecting at Christmas, and yesterday was the Feast of the Presentation.
Again, thank you all for your prayers! God bless you!

Praying, Rachel.
Have they also taking blood draws to measure the HCG? That coupled with ultrasounds will give you the peace of mind that the baby is gone.
If this is early on, the ultrasound needs to be extra powerful to find the sac (or lack of one). I have had miscarriages at different stages, and depending on the age of the baby will the ultrasound help.

I don't think they have done any blood testing, but I will recommend that to her when I talk to her next, which I am hoping to do today or tonight.
She was just past 8 weeks when she went in, and the baby's measurements were consistent with just about 8 weeks.
Thank you Jenn and Kristin, for your prayers!

Well, considering my mother was told I had no heartbeat at about that stage, I would say definitely get bloodwork and if that is inconclusive a second opinion. I praise God that my mother skipped her scheduled d&c because she was moving! Thank you, Holy Spirit!
Ultrasounds are not fail proof, especially in the early weeks. The bloodwork will tell the real tale.
Keeping her in prayer, that she may be at peace with God's will no matter the outcome.

Rachel,
I am praying for your sister. Your post mirrored almost exactly what I just went through. I went in for a routine ultrasound on Jan.3 and they found no heartbeat. I would have been 9 and a half weeks along. I went on to have another ultrasound when I would have been 11 weeks along and there still was no heartbeat. My doctor was very easy to talk to and I basically told him I wasn't going to have a D and C until I had another ultrasound and bloodwork to confirm. I didn't end up having a third ultrasound as I started to miscarry naturally, almost three weeks after the first ultrasound. I had no other signs until then. I ended up having a D and C last week. Emotionally it has been very hard.
My advice to your sister is to not do anything until she is positive that the pregnancy won't continue. If that takes ten ultrasounds and continual bloodwork then so be it.
I will be praying for her.

I have no advice to offer beyond what has already been said, but many prayers for your sister.
