I am having lots of trouble parenting my special needs son. He has become rude and defiant. We struggle daily and I don't know what to do. I have tried everything I can think of, read so many books on parenting and on all the issues he presents. Nothing we have tried has worked. He has a very loose understanding of cause and effect and no concept of time so most disciplinary techniques are useless with him.

If you read this please, please pray for us. I used to wonder what he would be when he grew up. Now I just hope he doesn't end up in prison or homeless. In this month of angels, Lord please strengthen Gabe's guardian angel. Please pour Life into my son and dispel the cobwebs from his mind and the hardness from his heart.

Michelle,

Have you considered talking to someone who works with people with similar levels of disability? They might have strategies you can use. (I have a severely autistic brother who is up to a 200 word vocabulary right now -- the best he's ever had) who is also about six feet tall. The people who work with him have to manage his behavior.)

Another option that you may have tried to is make his getting in trouble more concrete for him. Perhaps he starts out the day with five (or whatever number seems good to you) tokens velcroed to a small board. Each misbehavior gets a token taken off. When they are all off, a consequence follows. (The consequence should be something he is warned about each time he loses a token.) This approach has worked well with my little guy over the years.

A different approach might also be to give points or tokens of a different type when he's being good. My little guy loves being told that he is being given a point since after he collects ten points, he can trade them for a dollar.
