Dear ladies,
Yesterday my mother called to tell me that my brother's mother-in-law (actually his wife's stepmother) had been horribly injured in an accident at home. She is a woodworker (like my brother) who makes beautiful "turned" bowls on a lathe. Day before yesterday, she was apparently working on her lathe when a piece of wood flew up and hit her in the face.
Her husband happened to come home at midday, which he doesn't ordinarily do, and found her unconscious and bleeding profusely. Initially the doctors did not hold out hope for her survival, but yesterday were more optimistic, having operated to remove a piece of skull to allow her brain to swell. They will not know for some time the extent of the brain damage, and I haven't heard any new reports since yesterday, so all we can do is pray.
My sister-in-law lost her mother at 14; this lovely, vibrant woman is her father's third wife (after a terrible "rebound" marriage following her mother's death). The saddest thing about all this is that her father apparently said, as the doctors were discussing brain damage, that he wished he had not come home and found her alive. People say all kinds of things in times of emotion, and I can only hope he really didn't mean that he would rather have her dead than have to suffer with her through a brain injury. The family are not Catholic and have no schemata for seeing suffering as anything other than a curse -- in addition to healing for Joan, I am praying for the light of a larger hope and mercy to shine on them all and lead them out of despair.
Thanks so much for your prayers. Be assured that I'm praying for all of you.
Sally
UPDATE: Talked to my mom yesterday; Joan had had a second surgery which went well, and her brain swelling had gone down some. Physically she is is pretty good condition -- no longer at death's door, in other words -- but they will not know for some time yet the extent to which her brain function has been affected.
My sister-in-law, whom I've messaged with since the accident, really does talk all the time in terms of life only being worth living if you're "happy," ie able to do exactly what you want, to the end of self-fulfillment, at all times. While I'm obviously praying for total physical and mental healing here, I'm also praying for some spiritual healing and discernment of God's hand in suffering.
Thanks to all of you for your prayers. I'll keep you updated.
UPDATE: We're at the beach right now with my mother. When she left home, things were looking optimistic for my brother's mother-in-law, but last night he called to say that she had taken a serious turn for the worse and is not expected to live. They are already tentatively planning her funeral for this Saturday.
FINAL UPDATE: Joan died sometime on Tuesday, May 17. Please pray for the repose of her soul and for her family's consolation.

Oh, what terrible news! I am praying!
(And I'm sure that your SIL's father was speaking under stress...no one would want to come home to that kind of horrible scene...)

Praying! My husband is a woodworker hobbyist, and accidents like that are one of my biggest fears. I can only imagine his horror. I pray he is able to rejoice in still having her very soon and see God through this tragedy.

Oh my goodness, this is so awful! Praying for her recovery, a return to health and happiness, and of course, for him, in this time of great stress and worry.
