After 6 years at home, Laurea returned to public school today. Rick and I are very sad. Sad that she was not able to take the responsibilities of homeschooling with the priveledges.Sad that she will spent hours in that building, tied to the school calendar and schedule. We have travelled, let her choose many of her study subjects, used MODG teacher assist at her request and yet she has been unwilling to do the necessary work of learning. She just would not do the challenging assignments. It became a battle to get work done. Our home has been unhappy more often that not. This is not a new problem, but I finally realized that it was not getting better.
Rick and I both realize that school cannot force her to do her assignments either but, I will not be the one asking for the work.I hope to not be the focus of her stony silence.
Our oldest daughter is a senior is in the same school. Maggie went back to public in our third year of homeschooling. Having one child through the system, I feel I can better negotiate it. The school is a small one so although there are all the problems associated with a public high school, the scale is smaller and the teachers tend to know the students.
Brigid, our youngest will be lonely, as will I.
Rick and I question ourselves. We know that some families can complete the high school years at home. Is there some thing about us, is our community of homeschoolers just too small to support the interests and social needs of a teen, does it take a particular personality of parent and child?
We are not sure, we do hope that Brigid will wish to homeschool through high school and we hope that Laurea will eventually reurn home.
As always I will be watching the posts to glean the suggestions you all share, especially this teen board, because after all Brigid is almost 11 and as she says, that 's almost a teen.
To ease my heartsickness, I have read alot to Brigid, we finishe regular studies before luch and we bakes pineapple upside down cake and spicy gingerbread. Have also prepped the shrimp for dinner tonight. Cooking always soothes me,

Dear Viv,
I'm praying that this chapter in your family's educational venture will be a learning experience for all of you and that, with God's grace, it will bring all closer to one another and to Him.
Blessings,
Elizabeth

Hi Viv,
We will certainly pray for your family. I think that you ask some very important questions...possibly questions where the answers will only be revealed in Heaven. Feel free to ask specific questions on the teen forum. I'm sure that you will receive support as a way of preparing for a possible homecoming for Laurea.
I will mention my thoughts on PA, not to discourage but to reassure. I do believe that homeschooling in PA is extra difficult in a concrete and mysterious way. Our family moved from there a year ago to AZ. While in PA for the previous three years (both my husband and I were raised in NE PA but had moved away many moons earilier and returned hoping to stay) with our children, I was burdened...by the law...by the general contempt for and ignorance of homeschooling...by the lack of community. These are concrete reasons. I also believe that there are mysterious reasons that burden in PA as well...I truly can't put my finger on them. You are an awesome mom to homeschool in PA under these circumstances!
Please keep us updated and know that our prayers are with you all.
Love,

Viv, our prayers are with you as well. I have no words of wisdom or experience to share as my oldest is only 11. Your sadness breaks my heart. We will be praying for God's peace and joy for your family.

Viv,
Praying for your family. If this is God's will for your family, He'll see you through it ... sometimes it's so hard to see that His will can be different from what we envisioned to be the "right" way to do things. I'll be praying for peace for you all,

May Laurea be in the palm of God's hand.
You are courageous to trust.
And your family is blessed that cooking soothes you
Please do let us hear how it is going for all of you.
