We're headed out to the dr now for my 19 mo old son, Patrick. he had a bad flu over the weekend--fever, vomiting. doing better today but has inconsolable gas pain--dr think it could be something more and said she'll likely end up sending us to the hospital for xrays . please keep our dear Patchy in your prayers today, thanks!!

We just got back, and thank you all so much for your prayers! The doctor was very concerned and did send us for xrays, but thankfully the xrays didn't show any obstructions. They showed an abundance of, excuse me, fecal matter and gas. He has been refusing liquids today, so we have to have success pushing the liquids now or else we may end up with an IV tomorrow. So, if I could just ask for one more prayer that little Patrick will start accepting some liquids asap. In the meantime, I would love any tips on how to get a little guy with steel-trap lips to take a drink.

Molly,
I just saw your prayer request for Patrick. I will be praying for him to start drinking! Maybe going to the store and buying some different sodas--sprite, ginger ale, cranberry spritzer??? Let him have fun choosing which one he gets to drink? I don't remember how old he is, so he may be too young for this approach...Hang in there!

Praying for Patrick, Molly!
My little ones love to eat Capri Sun slushes with a spoon when they are sick. (Freeze the packets, then thaw a bit and mash them in a mug.) Sprite or ginger ale with a straw sometimes works too.

Molly, praying for Patrick! I hope he feels better soon. Popsicles are a great way to get fluids in. My doctor always recommends jell-o too.

Oh, please keep the prayers coming. He's still having a rough time. He is now quite free-flowing (lovely ), but he is still having gas pains and he has about the worse case of diaper rash I've ever seen.
He will not drink anything except milk, which certainly doesn't help the gas, but I'm diluting it as much as I can and so far he hasn't complained.
The doctor didn't want us to feed him or give him anti-gas med (Mycelin?), but now that we're sure there isn't an obstruction I think we'll give it a try.
Again, thank you all so much for praying for little Patrick .

Molly,
I would avoid anything carbonated. And I'd avoid milk. Once it hits your stomach, milk really is digested like a solid. Lemon Italian ice works well in this house, as do "slurpees" made in the blender with homemade lemonade. The gas, the diaper rash, and the cravings all could point to a milk allergy/intolerance. It's not unusual for an allergic reaction to cause a craving for the very thing to which are allergic. And boy,do those gas and rash symptoms sound like my milk-allergic guys .

Molly, we've dealt with some terrible diaper rashes here (chemo can cause a HORRIBLE rash) and I swear by calendula gel to clear them up. It's almost miraculous, it has such a remarkable effect!
Praying for your little guy!

Is the doctor sure he's not passing liquid stool around an obstruction of hard stool? Just checking.
When my dd had a horrible rash we soaked her bottom in the tub with domboro salts?? I'm not even sure of the spelling. I'll call dh and see if he remembers the name.
