Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi all,
I am mostly a lurker here, but I could really use some help today. I am 39 weeks pregnant and have been in almost constant prodromal labor for the last four days. (This is after literally months of contractions, since 19 weeks, including 6 weeks of partial bedrest.) I am emotionally and physically spent, having said every prayer I know with no relief, and am really struggling to bear this suffering with grace. We're hoping for a homebirth, but at this point an elective c-section is looking like an attractive option.

Please pray that, if it be God's will, this baby arrives quickly (or that the painful contractions might let up a bit until it IS God's appointed time). And please pray for my poor husband and two young kids, who are doing everything they can to help me and also to run the house on their own, since I am utterly distracted by this state of affairs. Not to mention grumpy.

Thank you in advance! For my part, I'm writing down the other prayer requests here today, and offering every contraction for your needs...

oh, my dear, my heart goes out to you!

I know so very well what you are going through! that's how my first 2 were born, and the third is following in their footsteps. and for me, as painful as those darn ongoing contractions are, the despair is even more dangerous, especially at the end.

I AM AND WILL CONTINUE TO LIFT YOU UP IN PRAYER. may mother Mary wrap her mantle of love and peace around you, may the angels comfort and strengthen your patient children and husband, and may the tiniest angels keep that unborn baby company until it is his/her perfect time to join the rest of you.

lighting a candle for you now. please keep us posted ... and hang in there.

PS: we, too, are hoping for a homebirth with this one. I'll pray that can happen for you, but don't be hard on yourself if a C-section happens instead. do what you need to do ... and remember, this, too, shall pass!

I have labors like this too. They are exhausting! Praying for you. Also...this is going to be a bit controversal, and feel free to gasp in horror and throw it out the window if you want, but with my first homebirth (my second pregnancy), my water broke around midnight and I started having very puttery, far spaced contractions, the start of a labor that ended up being two days long (and has actually been one of my shorter ones, haha!). My midwife suggested a beer. Now, we are not drinkers. In fact, the fact that we even had beer in the house was weird...a couple in the fridge door leftover from a long-ago six pack. But it did the trick. It made me nice and sleepy and I was able to get some rest in spite of the contractions. One beer isn't going to hurt a full-term, healthy baby and certainly isn't more potent than any drugs they would be giving you in the hospital. So...just my two cents. With my next baby, my labor started again very late at night and I was beer-less and wasn't able to really sleep well for three days. I'm 30 weeks pregnant now, and I plan on having beer in the house for this one, lol...(we live in a dry county. you have to plan in advance!) Anyway,,,your message was posted a couple of days ago, hopefully this is all a moot point and you have that baby now!

How are you doing today? I had this with my 5th baby and it is exhausting in all ways. Have you tried warm baths? I took lots of walks and as painful as it was, it helped to get some fresh air and get out of the house. I am praying for you and your family. Please let us know when baby comes!!

I am praying for you!

It is so difficult to focus on the arrival of your sweet baby when suffering! Meditation sent my mind to a blissful oasis with my last baby ~ the mind is a powerful thing. I pray that you find sweet relief during this last bit of time before birthing your baby

Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts. I'm still here, still waiting, but trying to set up more out-and-about time with friends and family instead of "resting" alone in bed thinking about how bad I feel. Viviane, you hit the nail on the head when you said that despair is the greatest danger right now, and I've realized it's much easier for me to succumb to that demon when I'm by myself.

The midwife has agreed to open her bag of tricks on Monday (the day after my due date). A membrane sweep worked within 24 hours the last two times, so at the very least I have a light at the end of the tunnel -- she won't let me sit around another 3 weeks doing nothing if I don't feel I can bear it.

(And ps to Melanie -- wine and beer have already been prescribed and consumed at various points! In great moderation, of course.) :)

It really lifted my heart to log in and see all your replies. Thank you, thank you.

I'm delighted to update with the news that baby Miriam arrived this afternoon. The home birth almost wasn't -- turns out all the prodromal labor was a sign that her cord was too short for her to descend properly until we broke the waters. Which had meconium in it. The midwives, not to mention my DH, were awesome and we had her born within minutes.

Thank you all for your prayers and support. They were, as you can see, vitally necessary for this little miracle of a birth.

Day after day I will bless you, Lord; I will tell of your marvelous deeds!
