Hi everyone,
Could you spare a small prayer for my 12yo daughter? Her alopecia is acting up again, and she has lost about 50% of her hair. It's hitting her hard this time...she finally has more self-awareness, and it's hit the point where she can't just judiciously part it and hide most of the bald areas.
Thanks.

Praying for her.
My neighbor's 14 yo niece went through this too for several years. If you need any recommendations, I'll be glad to ask for you. I know they tried quite a few things and it seems the last thing they did seemed to work quite successfully.

Ok...I just left her a message. She's actually on her way from TX to CO right now for Christmas but she should call me back and I'll let you know. I know her niece wore head wraps and hats for quite some time before her hair started growing back.

Hi Amy,
Here's what she said. Her niece had it from about age 10-13. Once her cycle started, her hair grew back. She's 14 1/2 now and hasn't had any issues for over a year. They first went to a dermatologist and he referred them to an actual alopecia specialist to test as to why the hair was falling out. I guess they did biopsies and bloodwork she said to rule out the reasons. However, all of hers came back normal. So, she does have severe eczema and said that sometimes the hair follicles can get "confused" and causes the hair to die out. Since there wasn't a medical basis, they say that it's stress related. They recommended she see a counselor but that caused the girl more stress so her mom never took her.
She said they also joined a local support group and although it was mostly older people, they rec'd some good ideas and tips about how to deal with it and it was a comfort to the girl just to see she wasn't "alone" in that suffering.
The specialist recommended shampoo and conditioner with no perfumes, chemicals or dyes. She thinks it was called Basics. ?! She said there's also a prescription version. She said the same about the soap. To use very mild perfume, chemical and dye free.
They told her that in 98% of the cases it typically lasts about 2 years.
Soo, I'm not sure how helpful any of this information is or how long your daughter has had the condition but hopefully some it you can use.
Blessings,

Oh, Amy! I'm sending lots of for your dd, and praying with much empathy as the mom of an almost 13yo. So difficult for a young lady.
Perhaps this is the Christmas for the adorable hat and scarf? My dd loves to wear hats! There are some super cute ones at Target with the purses! You probably already know that though.

Praying for your dd, Amy. Tough times for a 12-yo to go through. Give her a hug for us too. We found some cute hats at TJ Maxx!

Thanks for the tip about TJ Maxx Stef, we are always on the lookout for cute hats!
And thank you everyone for your prayers - FWIW, dd has been dealing with this since she was 5. Very well, I might add! But now that she is older, it is hitting her harder. She doesn't want to be different in ANY way - even wearing a hat she knows it's "different." She had a great last 1.5 years too, where much of her hair stayed in and grew. Now it's all coming out and I think it's the dissapointment that's getting to her.

Praying especially for her, Amy. Hair loss is so hard for us girls. I've lost large sections of hair from psoriatic arthritis. It was very hard. Fortunately, I love hats and scarves, so I had fun with those while I needed to.
God bless you both.
Blessings,
