Hello everyone,
I wanted to share with you that we just received some bad news concerning our two children, Clare, 8, and Joey, 6, with Cystic Fibrosis. The head of the department and our new doctor called me herself to inform me that both children cultured with the dreaded bacteria, Pseudomonas, at their visit on Monday. We are quite surprised as things seemed to be going pretty well, and they are young.
Pseudomonas is the killer germ of CF, almost impossible to eradicate because it doesn't need oxygen to survive. It buries deep within the bronchial mucus and does much lung damage. My husband's brother died of it in '79 at the age of 13, but the improvements to science in this area are enormous and we are beginning aggressive treatment to *try* to eradicate it. It is time-consuming, expensive, and not without side-effects and will take 2 months. As it is the sick season (they are more susceptible now to very virus), the holidays, and well, I'm the mother of a large family, it is true that it is "never a good time"!
I asked her what to expect, how would things change now....? and she said, well: we don't know, but we do know that those who culture Pseudomonas have reduced life spans. I'm not sure what that means. I know that God knows exactly what their length of days is, what their missions are, and nothing has changed. He is and always has been in control and we just need to do our best to care for them.
Ironic that I decided to "jump back in" to the Forum just a short while ago as I thought it would do me some good. I may not be able to be as participatory as I'd like to be, after all! But I'm going to try. Because I believe staying connected to you, my sisters in Christ, who are living my same life, is very important and life-giving.
I thank you all for your prayers and support over these years and for the future! It means so much to feel the presence and know the reality of the community of love in Christ and in our vocations of wife and mother. Forgive me for being in and out as a post-er.....I do keep you all 4 Realers in prayer.
XOXOXOXOXO

Nina, Friend...my fellow Sister in Chaos....please keep us updated and please know we are walking this journey with you, in prayer. I know it is a little different with Lily, but she did grow pseudo in her trach....scary...and after that nasty levoquin, with all of the lovely black box warnings...it did eventually go away. I know it is different with CF...but the doc were pleasantly surprised they got rid of it....I will pray and offer up for the same result for you. You will appreciate this little story. I was just in the almost empty local grocery store, and heard this lady coughing and hacking....and getting cold meds, I RAN to the checkout whispering to my teen, "HURRY!!!". Of course, of all the self check outs, she came right behind me at my lane....I was so keyed up, I jumped back from her, grabbed my receipt and ran out. My teenage son was laughing hysterically, thought I had gone way off the deep end....was being a little too over the top. Maybe so, but you can't help it when you have medically fragile kids.
I will be praying!!!!!! I'm so glad you checked back in, we have missed you!!

Oh, Nina, it's a privilege to pray for you and your dear children no matter how infrequently you post. You're a truly brave and faith-filled mom. I'm glad I have the chance to pray for Clare, Joey and you.
I'm not wise and I have no way to discern God's plan for you and your children, but I do know that we're all here at 4Real for very important reasons. I'm thankful you've asked us to pray for and with you.

Nina, What an incredible witness you and your family are in this culture of death we live in. It truly is a privilege to pray for you and your dear children.

Dear Nina,
I will keep Clare, Joey, and your whole family in my prayers. Fr. Saguto is away right now, but I will ask him to say a Mass for Clare and Joey when he returns.
With my love,
Christine
