This is NOT Ed's year!!! I posted a few days ago asking for any experiences with trying to re-establish normal intestinal flora after too many antibiotics. Ed got worse during the night, so we went to the E.R. this morning. He's been admitted on IV fluids to try to give his digestion a rest. He's spent more time in the hospital this year than since he first had his spinal tumor removed in 1976!
Please pray that he can begin to heal from this. He's had "the runs" for a month now. He's exhausted and trying to have a positive attitude but it is hard.
We're off to give him lots of hugs and kisses at the hospital. Thanks for praying. This list has the best prayer warriors!
Much love,
Mary Alice in Kansas

UPDATE
Thank you so much for the love and prayers. They really sustain us.
Ed is doing a bit better g.i.-wise today but is profoundly weak. He was sitting up trying to sign some papers and just couldn't keep hold of the pen. My chest was so tight watching him like this. I couldn't cry in front of him, but just wait til I get in the shower tonight and no one else can hear.........
There's good news and bad news on his lab work. The good news is that his kidney function is better than it has been in the last two years--perfect, even, so praise God for that! The shocking news is that he has the serum protein level of someone living in a refugee camp. No joke. He's borderline having to have tube feedings. No wonder he's so very weak. I met with the dietician this morning and she says that once Ed's system can tolerate more than clear liquids, he's going to need to work up to around 85 grams of protein a day to catch up. That's a lot of protein!!!!! And that will be within a 1600 to 2000 calorie diet. Good luck to me, I guess! That serum protein level hit me hard. All I can think about is video of children in Africa who don't have the strength to swat flies off their faces, and truly Ed is nearly that weak. He can't feed himself, brush his teeth, etc. And now he can't really sign his name.
Please continue the prayers. I'm going to start another post about protein suggestions in the appropriate forum, so if you have ideas, please send them to me there.
You dear sisters are the best, truly. I'm more thankful than I have the words to express.
Much love,
Mary Alice in Kansas

Thank you for all the beautiful prayers and encouragement. Ed's home and so far is tolerating his meals well. He got such a hero's welcome from the children when I brought him home. A terrific physical therapist who is a member of our parish is working with him to build his strength, flexibility and endurance. We are so blessed.
My heart is full of gratitude for all your prayers.
Much love, and my prayers for your families,
Mary Alice in Kansas
