Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm not sure where? to post this, but I could probably use some prayers on this so I'll start here. I have been nursing almost exclusively my now 9 mo old ds and had a return of cycles at 4 months and only 3-5 days max with regular to light bleeding, not uncommon for me, but with this period it's been 10 days of light to moderate and doesn't seem to be finishing. Anyway, if anyone has experienced this could you PM me. I am still nursing full-time (although baby's been pretty sick this week ) and I don't believe that I could have been PG and have miscarried before and it was quite different than this, any thought from you wise and more experienced ladies would be so appreciated. I'm not having any pain whatsoever and have NO history of ANY uterine problems. Sorry this got so long, thanks so much.

I will be praying for you, Meredith. I'm sure there will be many moms on this list with good advice to impart.

Was your cycle longer this time by any chance even by a few days? Longer cycles have longer length of menses. It very much could also be just a premenopause symptom. I recall you are in the 40-49 age range, right? My cycles (length and length of menses) the past year have changed quite a bit.

Throw breastfeeding in there as another variable and you never know what you get - lots of variation in hormones. It probably will end shortly. And as long as it's not painful of excessively heavy, I would probably just continue to watch the next several cycles and see what's happening. Marilyn Shannon has some ideas for nutrition during premenopause that can help with symptoms in her book Fertility, Cycles, and Nutrition.

Could be hormones - in any case, I said a prayer!

Meredith,

My husband and I teach Natural Family Planning for the Couple to Couple League. In our student manual, The Art of Natural Family Planning, it states that a woman who has a long or continuous bleeding episode should get checked out by her doctor, as this is a symptom of a type of endometrial problem (p. 415 in The Art of Natural Family Planning).

Also, are you charting you cycles? If this bleeding episdoe was not preceeded by ovulation, then it could be breakthrough bleeding. The examples of breakthrough bleeding in The Art of Natural Family Planning are 9-10 days long and often accompanied by a mucus discharge.

Hope this helps!

Dawn

Thanks ladies for all you comments and suggestions and most especially your prayers. I haven't been extremely alarmed as I am in no pain. Things have subsided to almost nothing so I'll probably check in with my OB and see if he wants to do anything. Was hoping for no medical intervention, if I could help it, kwim. It's probably age and lack of sleep with a sick baby

I blame all things on that combo.

Said a prayer for you, Meredith!

Meredith,
Not to spread your age around    , but didn't I see you mention somewheres that you hit the b-i-g 4-0 recently? Seems like I remember that because I'll be hitting it (literally) in 3 more months so I'm keeping a mental log of all other 4-0's.

Anyway, my OB/GYN told me that this kind of thing is very common as you get older. Oh, lucky us, huh!

Add a nursing, sleepless baby into the mix, I would think that just about sums things up.

Not to mention the fact that during that whole "sick-baby-up-all-night-episode", we also had very bright moon illuminated nights, not good for hormones after further research.

Thanks again for all the help!

My mom had some prolonged bleeding cycles during her pre-menopause -- which according to Debra Waterhouse can be a span of quite a few years with modern women -- so I'm expecting that may well happen to me any time now, since I'm 43!   I suppose if it happened again you could ask a few questions to see if this is something that has happened with women in your family.

I said a prayer for you.
