Brayden was a week old yesterday and he has continued to lose weight since birth. I shouldn't be surprised that he's acting like a preemie but he did so well in the hospital that I thought we were going to avoid any feeding issues. Today I've started pumping after each feed and giving him the rest in a bottle. It has been a very emotional ride for me as it feels a bit like failure. He has another weight check on Monday. Would you pray that he would gain by then??

Oh, Martha! I'm praying dearest! Don't feel like a failure! God's hand is in this, He is directing, trust in that and try to relax and have peace that you have been courageous in nurturing and sheltering this little life. You are nurturing whether you are stroking his tiny noggin while he eats via a feeding tube, a bottle, or the breast. He knows his mommy is there.

I don't know?? Would bumping up your fat intake be a help?? Try to eat plenty of full fat foods - coconut oil is a very, very good oil with healthy fats for you and baby.

Oh, Martha... praying for him here. He is still a little guy and it is going to take time and patience to help him learn the skills well and get stronger and more efficient. Your patience and persistence along with just gettting milk in him, like you are doing with the pumping/feeding, is going to help him grow.
Although I wish it would make a difference, the research has indicated that mom's diet does not affect the average amount of fat or calories in her milk. What has been shown to make a difference though in fat content of breastmilk is the degree of emptiness of the breast. The fuller the breast, the lower the fat content of the milk and the emptier the breast, the higher the fat content of the milk. So expressing foremilk before nursing and then nursing on the less full breast could help in increasing calorie content of the milk he is taking. Longer and more frequent feedings therefore might make a difference also.
The technique of breast compression has been shown to increase fat content of milk as well and can encourge a baby to keep sucking/swallowing when he starts slowing down.
