My maternal grandmother has just been admitted to the hospital (after being in the ER all day ). She has some severe internal bleeding, but they aren't sure from what. Her blood count levels were low, so she's now having a blood transfusion.
But all this messes up the balance of other problems...she's no spring chicken at 89 years old! Please pray for direction for the medical staff they can find what the source of this bleeding is, and to help my mother and her siblings in their amount of stress level in this situation.

Well, good news and bad news. The good news: Grandma is home and they found the cause of the bleeding. The bad news: the cause of the bleeding. She has a bloody, oozing tumor taking up 3/4 of her upper stomach. She had a fall a few weeks back that must have bruised an internal organ, but no external bruise. She took Advil for the pain, but that made this tumor bleed. It probably already had been slowly bleeding, but the Advil made it really bleed.
She's now stable, blood pressure normal, blood count okay, they have stopped the bleeding. We're waiting for the biopsy results and meeting with the gastroenterologist, but he told my mother that it's most probably cancerous and she will probably only have about 2 months to live. As she is 89 and with other health risks, she can't undergo surgery (she had a bad reaction just to the anesthesia just for the endoscopy) and probably can't undergo radiation.
Grandma was born and raised in Louisiana, in the New Orleans area. She's a genteel woman, still never goes out without her hat, heels, dress and lipstick. Daily Mass attendee, even now at this age. She's been an inspiration. Faith and family have been the center of her life.
We'll see how this plays out, as it's so hard for me to see how someone so vibrant and strong could decline that fast, but I know it's possible. I'll update when we know more. Thanks for your prayers...it's so appreciated!

Just an update: The biopsy indeed came back malignant. It's inoperable, and they give her 6 months at the most, but expect it to be shorter than that. The doctors had originally measured the tumor as 12 inches. At first we thought we heard incorrectly, but her stomach is so distended now, from the tumor and the fluid build-up. She's progressing downhill very fast. Regular pain meds weren't working, and to stay in her assisted living home she needs to be with constant care, so hospice care has started. Already the new pain meds are helping some.
She's in a lot of pain, but very lucid. It's almost as this has jolted her out of her dementia. She's ready to see her Maker, but when I talked with her about hoping that some of her pain could be relieved, she remarked that she needed to make these sacrifices to get to heaven. Beautiful. She is a very inspiring women.

She is a very inspiring woman, Jenn. I'll pray that Hospice is a true blessing. I found them to be especially helpful when dealing with pain relief. Our prayers continue.
