I don't feel quite right for asking, mostly because I am not one to ask for help when it comes to things concerning me.

 | That said I think I may need a prayer or two.
I found out earlier this month that I have reflux disease. Dr. (ENT 2 hours away) put me on Previcid and ordered a test called a barium swollow. Due to dh being ill then dd birthday just after I had to cancel the appointment for the test. Since the first visit to the doctor I have run out of medication, am going to get some more tomorrow from a local doctor.

Tonight I looked up what exactly a barium swollow is and how it is run so I can call and reschedule tomorrow. Well, come to find out it is the first line test for esophogical cancer. Now I am worried and scared to death. And, no, the ENT did not mention this when I went to see him three weeks ago.

So I need help. I feel funny asking a group of virtual strangers, but I don't have many support resources available to me. If one of you can find the time could you say a small prayer?

 Thanks,
 Charlene

The test is a diagnostic for some cancers but it definitely is used for a multitude of general gastro-intestinal diagnosis. It is very commonly used for getting a better look at GERD (reflux disease) and ulcers (which are associated with GERD). This would be a very common diagnostic procedure to recommend when dealing with a new diagnosis of GERD. I hope that you will find reassurance in that. I definitely will pray for you as well - for peace of mind and a good prognosis to this test.

My son Aidan had a barium swallow study when he was tube fed as a youngster -- anyway, as Mary said I understand it's commonly used for GERD and other diagnoses besides cancer. I will say a prayer for you for peace of mind and good results.

Don't feel bad about asking for prayers; it blesses us to be able to pray for each other. I for one have asked for prayers SO many times from the ladies (and gentlemen) on this forum; bless them!

I had one years ago to check for a stomach ulcer...not cancer.
Saying some prayers for you today.

I'm with Willa, Charlene! Not only do I receive prayer here, I also receive a direct line to great information that soothes worries. Thanks for the opportunity to pray. If you have a chance, we'll look forward to an update.

 Love,

Thank you all so much for the support and prayers. I went to our local doctor and he gave me a new script. He also explained that reflux has to be occuring for years before something called Barrett's esophogas (disease, condition, syndrome?) occured. Then I'd have to have had Barrett's for years before it turns into cancer. (Makes me so angry that the first ENT didn't tell me all this at the time.) The only thing that has me worried now is that it is possible that I've had the reflux for years and not known it and may be experiencing the beginning of Barrett's. But the Previcid is an excellent medication for both the reflux and Barrett's.

We talked so much today that he almost forgot to order the dreaded test. In a way that made me feel much better. But, I go for the test on Nov. 1.

That was the good news. The bad news came after I got home this morning from the doctor. Dd has another sore throat. I called and we went back to the doctor. This is her 4th one this year. We go to an ENT (different than the one I just saw) with her on Nov 8 to see about the tonsils coming out.

Dr. S's major concern is dd's weight. Mid-December 2004 when this first started she weighed 48 lbs. In July 2005 she weighed 52 lbs. She has had so many episodes of tonsilitis that she is back down to 48 lbs as of today. So basically she hasn't gained any weight this year because it hurts so often to swollow. Since July she has had an episode once every 6-8 weeks!

So please keep us in your thoughts and prayers, especially dd (Bethany).

Thank you all again so much.

 Charlene

I will be praying for you and Bethany! I had chronic throat and ear infections when I was younger. They are so painful. Poor Bethany!!

Do you have any holy water in which you could make the sign of the cross on her throat daily? It always made me more peaceful when my mom would do that for me.

Just a thought...and also bless yourself.
