She is the newborn daughter of our friends, Brian and Edie. She has Ebstein's Anomaly, which means that her circulatory system, particularly the part that pumps blood from heart to lungs, isn't your standard-issue set of veins and arteries. She also has two holes in her heart, which may or may not heal over time. She will need two or three more surgeries besides the one she's already had, which placed a temporary shunt so more blood could flow into her pulmonary artery.
She's at the nation's top hospital, Johns Hopkins, and receiving wonderful care. Still, it is scary for Mom, Dad, and big brothers (still pretty young), and I know they will appreciate your prayers.
We've known Brian since his college days; his family is one of the "parish mainstay" families here.

Update August 5:
Samantha was doing quite well as of Saturday (bottle feeding, stitches removed, etc.) and has had a big setback. Her heart rate is erratic and it has been difficult for the doctors to monitor it. She's back in the pediatric ICU (she had worked her way to the last step before a normal room and now she is all the way back to the PICU). She can't have any bottle feedings. Brian is trying to put a brave face on it but this is very worrisome.

Nancy--This is very scary and I will pray. I wanted to add that one of my closest friends has a little girl who was born with a similar anomaly. She had no pulmonary artery and a cleft palette in addition to the circulatiry problems you mentioned. It was a difficult few years, but she is a happy, bouncy first grader today! I will e-mail sweet Katie and ask her to pray for Samantha.
