I have a beautiful dd. She is just precious in every way. Never a problem, always obedient, prayerful, helpful, etc. She is my closest ally after dh in raising the little ones, always the one to remind us to pray, she helped my dh deliver our last baby (midwife missed it ),does her school work without question and asks for more!
I could go on and on about her virtue but tonight she confided to me that she is lonely. She is between two brothers who are very close to each other and her next sister is only 10. We live very rurally and have little to no money to spend on an extracurricular activities for her. She does do reenacting and ballroom dancing outside the home but there isn't anyone she really sees for an extended amount of time. There is one other girl (Catholic h/s) around here that is her age but I have seen behavior in her that sends up major red flags to me, so I can not encourage her pursuing that.
I know this request is small in light of the many other requests but I so want her to be happy. She is such a treasure. I told her we would start a novena for the intention of a good, holy friendship with a girl her own age tomorrow.
Who would be a good choice to pray too? Does anyone have a novena to recommend? And please, if you could, say a prayer for my dd Anne.
Thank you.

Here are some patron saints of young people
John the Apostle is the patron saint of friendships
Do any of these strike you as being a good choice?
My daughter was in a similar position when she was growing up. We live rurally too and she is my only daughter. We prayed together for a friendship and she got a very dear friend -- whose name happens to be Anne -- and who is still her very dear friend.
I will definitely be praying for your Anne, who sounds like a sweetie. If you decide on a novena, please update and I will pray along with you. Loneliness is an on and off problem at our house, too.

Oh, prayers for you!
My dd18 was often like that growing up. It was only very recently that she found some good friends (like AngieMc's dd) She was often the oldest at homeschooling outings from the time she was about 10. It was hard.
Prayers for her - and you, too - it is hard to see our children feel badly.
Can she connect with some of the other dd of 4realers online? I know my dd has a lot of fun talking with Stef's daughter, Angie's, MacBeth's.....And online friends can be some of the best, too. I know it isn't the same as an IRL friend for a teen, but....

I will pray for your dd, and join you in a novena if you decide to start one for her!
Teen friendships are hard - we didn't live rurally, but moved an awful lot while growing up and it always seemed that just as I'd start to get settled I'd have to start all over again making friends.

I will pray for you dd! I have the same problem with my dd (12 yo). Her best friend lived next door to us in the states, but it has been difficult here for her to establish a close friendship.

I second Laura's suggestion, Maddie, about online friendships. They're not perfect but I love that the girls can support each other through the teen years even from afar.
Praying for your dd. My own (17 now) has often been in the same situation where she's the oldest and it is tough for her sometimes.

Oh, put Grandma on it! AussieAnnie has several beautiful novena prayers to St. Anne listed on her blog right now- who better to help your dear dd?
I will keep her also in my prayers... it is hard to feel lonely at any age.

I will certainly pray for her! She sounds very like my 14yo daughter -- wish we were close to you.

Dear Maddie - I am praying for your dd. I know (from experience) that finding the right friends for our dd is so important. My thoughts though (after discussion with many on this board and off) is that our dd need only one or two good friends - and also that no friends is better than the wrong friends. I know that I pray for the right friends for my dd (who has no sisters..yet) - and I second the online friendships - online kindred spirits are such a blessing.

One more thought...we have found that up to about age 12, girl friendships can be more easily had or not. Around 13, these young ladies start going their own ways and family choices can feel more divided. For example, some can't watch any movies, some can but only G rated, some can watch PG13 but only with a parent, some can watch PG13 on their own, etc. The key for us has been to find other families who respect our choices and whose choices we respect (even if we disagree.) Things start smoothing out again at around 16, when most young people are more comfortable within themselves and we know which families have mutual respect. Perhaps your dd is very close to the next phase of her friendships . Praying!
Love,

Thank you all for your prayers and advice, I will be coming back to this in the next day or so. We have not started our novena yet but will post when we decide on one. I'm here nursing babykins after a short break from the kitchen. The children and I have a chance to bring baked goods, my jams, and some fresh mulberries to the local farmer's market so I'm baking, picking and canning like crazy! I'm so excited at the thought of helping to bring money in and help dh.
I am so grateful for the prayers and thoughts and am very eager to talk with you all very soon. I have a quick update to post regarding our mortgage issue too.
Much love in Christ,

Maddie,
I know that Sally Clarkson used to talk about her teenage daughter's loneliness. Her daughter, Sarah, is the oldest of four, two brothers close in age and then a much younger sister. Maybe you can find some help and comfort in some of Sally's writings. Sarah also has a book that might speak to your daughter.
I will pray for her. I feel that my oldest daughter will be facing the same feeling soon.
