The 3-month-old son of friends of ours has not been gaining weight properly for some time, and they've been running tests to see what's happening. Today they took him to the pediatric GI specialist, who basically told them that the baby was starving to death. His tests indicated either not enough to eat, or cystic fibrosis.
His mother, my friend, has been nursing him after not nursing her last baby, and I think she has had him on a bottle-feeding-type schedule, so I am hoping and praying that it's just a breastfeeding problem, like not demand-feeding during growth spurts so that her supply has fallen off, and not something more serious. She is understandably upset and scared -- apparently the doctor let her know in no uncertain terms that she was an idiot, which on top of learning that your child might have CF could not have been terribly reassuring.
Anyway, this sweet little family could really use prayers. They have two lovely little girls, ages 4 and 2, who are not to interact with the baby for a solid week (so as not to stress him), which will not be easy for anyone, especially in a tiny house.
Thanks so much -- praying for all your intentions, as always.
Sally

Praying for them - and for the doc to be more compassionate and that all will work together to find a really simple and good solution for the baby.

Oh my, yes! This poor mom and baby need good information, reassurance, and support. Perhaps a lactation consultant could help as well as a La Leche League Leader. I'm praying .
Love,

Well, I don't think -- I HOPE -- they won't be seeing the GI specialist regularly. He was a doctor who could see them immediately, without a six-week wait.
The baby goes for a sweat chloride test tomorrow, which will tell them more about the cystic fibrosis possibility (I think? I know there are moms here who have dealt with CF and would know more about the diagnostic process than I do).
They are doing bottles for the next week, to be able to measure what he's taking in, which will probably KO the nursing. I've been kicking myself for not being more proactive, when I've been with her, about trying to get her to nurse him more on demand. He'd be fussy, and she would say, "It's not time for you to eat yet," and I would think, growth spurt, feed the baby, but he's her third, and I hated to sound overbearing . . . Now I wish I'd been overbearing. But I figured that she knew her baby better than I did . . . and of course that might not be the source of the problem at all.
Anyway, the sweat chloride test is tomorrow, so please storm heaven for sweet baby Edward, that what's wrong is something easily fixable, and for his very worried parents.
Thanks so much,
Sally
