Hi Friends,
In early December, the pediatric pulmonologist assigned to our two children (at our Cystic Fibrosis Clinic) determined that they needed what is called in CF parlance, "tune-ups". At this time of year, the risks of infections and complications are higher: the doctors are very pro-active and prefer to strike preemptively if the kids show any cough persisting beyond 1 week, and neither of the children was clearing up completely from a reasonably mild virus we all had starting in the Fall.
On top of this, Clare (age 6), was losing weight. She tends to lose associated with her infections, but it greatly concerns them, because a weaker, thinner body doesn't fight the infections as well. It is not necessarily a sign that she is having malapsorption issues or that the enzymes aren't working, but simply that her body is fighting harder and burning more calories. Regardless, the pressure is then on, and treatments and appointments are increased and meds administered for at least 3 weeks.
We had JUST finished a course after Christmas for both Joey and Clare, when I noticed both of them occassionally coughing a few days later. Now, they are definitely both coughing. (So am I and the rest of the family. So I suspect it is a completely different virus.) Still, the docs want them back to "baseline" and that means starting a whole new course of treatments AGAIN. It is so hard on their little systems. They take such powerful antibiotics. Clare even developed a yeast infection on this last course, so I always resist a bit putting them right back on.
I am waiting through the weekend. My husband and I always make these decisions together, so please pray for discernment for us, in terms of the the next step. It can be very stressful dealing with the docs who truly and sincerely question that we are capable, with our other many responsibilities, of properly caring for *two* children, let alone one, with this disease. In fact, they are incredulous.
Every time we start increased care, it adds quite a bit to our schedule. In my already weakened pregnant state, I get quite overwhelmed and DO start to doubt myself and if I am up to this task!
