Yesterday, my mother celebrated her 55th birthday, but it wasn't a day filled with the usual joy an laughter. Instead it was one filled with anxiety. On Friday afternoon she received the disturbing news from her physician that her health is very bad. He is sure that she will have a catastrophic illness in the very near future, but that it was a toss-up whether that would be a heart attack, stroke, or complication from diabetes.

Up to now, she's been in fairly good health, apart from chronic migraine. Suddenly, her blood pressure is very high, her cholesterol is off the charts and her blood sugar is high. She has a high-stress job and doesn't eat at all well. She has smoked for 43 years - heavily.

I am worried for her and hope that this check-up was the wake-up call she needed to start caring for herself so that she can enjoy many years of health. I am an only child, and my step-siblings are not in the picture at all. I worry about what will happen if she falls seriously ill. Thanks be to God, she lives only 3 minutes from me so she wouldn't have to give up her independence. My step-dad is a wonderful man, but would certainly need our help if anything happened to her.

Mum could use prayers right now, for her health, and for her peace of mind.

It is so hard to watch our loved ones struggle through health related matters, especially those that can be "fixed" to some degree or other. Your mother is in my prayers, Nissa.

Thank you all for your prayers for my mum. She's in very good spirits and seems to be heeding warnings to watch her diet, stress, and to quit smoking. She's going to have some rough days ahead while she re-orders her entire lifestyle. I know that your prayers will be a powerful help to her.
