On Saturday on the way to the hospital to visit our new nephew, Aidan, my husband and I decided to stop at the cemetery to visit our daughter Mary’s grave. My in-laws had put an angel statue on it recently and I wanted to check it out. While we were standing at her grave, my Len looked around and commented that we had a new neighbor (in other words, there was a fresh unmarked grave next to Mary's plot). Then we looked at each other and realized that our "new neighbor" was buried in our own plot. When we purchased Mary's plot, there were no family plots available so we purchased a single grave for Mary and a double plot next to it for Len and I. We just stared at each other wondering what plausible explanation we could come up with to explain away a rectangular shaped dirt patch where grass used to be.
Well we went to the cemetery this morning and someone is actually buried in our plot. It was a clerical error and they were very apologetic. Of course I burst into tears. I am not sure why but IT IS important to us that we be buried next to our daughter.
Rather than put the other family who have so recently lost their loved one through the trauma of moving the body, we have opted to have Mary's body moved. They are giving us two double plots (rather than the single next to a double that we now have) but they would like to us to be there to see them move the casket over to the new grave (After this screw-up, I think they want us to feel confident that her body actually ends up where it belongs). My sweet daughter died 4 years ago but all of this has certainly opened up some old wounds. I am not at all angry. Mistakes are made - it's part of being human. I just feel sad. So I ask for your prayers for strength, courage, and peace.
Blessings,
Heather

Praying for you.
I think God will richly bless you for having done the heroic thing here, and opting to handle the pain and trauma of moving your daughter rather than putting the recently bereaved family through this situation. What a considerate and generous act!

Heather what a shock, beyond imagining.. My husband and I have a plot next to my father and I think what I'd think and feel if I went to visit and discovered something similar....
Despite your shock and distress (if you didn't have it, you wouldn't be normal) you have thought of the other people too, who have been caught up in it all, your christian charity has touched me greatly, I will pray that you and your family are greatly blessed through this trial for the gracious way you are handling it.

Heather -
Praying for you and your family. How upsetting - both to find out about the mix-up and to face what's involved in putting it right.
Peace,
Nancy

Heather, I am so touched by your story. What an emotional sacrifice -- Christian charity indeed! -- to move your daughter. Praying for strength and peace for you and your family during this difficult time. May Our Lady hold you close to her.

Oh Heather...the thought of this just makes my stomach knot up. I'm trying not to imagine it, but of course my mind is already there. I'm so very sorry.
Is it possible to have someone else represent your family to oversee the move? A lawyer or a trusted friend? I know I absolutely could not watch it. I think it would make the grief process start all over for me.
Right now, our Becca is in a row reserved for other babies. Dh and I always figured we'd be buried at Arlington, but now we know we want to go to where Becca is. She'll have to be moved to our location in the same cemetary at that time, but I think it'll be ok.
We'll pray for you, Heather. I see that your Mary is the same age as our Rebecca, who was born in December 2003. I know they'll both be watching over you.

Thank you dear sweet ladies for all your prayers and support. They are helping to keep us sane and relatively peaceful.
Lorri:
I am sure that we could get someone else to oversee the move but it just doesn't feel right. It just feels like something we have to take care of ourselves. I think that the grief has been removed layer by layer over these last four years and perhaps this will be another layer for us to work through. The Lord must have a purpose and I put my trust in that!!!
I pray that Rebecca and Mary are friends up in heaven!!!
