I need to ask once again for prayers for my little Steven (18 mon). I have to take him to see the neurosurgeon today at 11:30. He's had a strange bump/swelling on his head since Saturday and it's been getting bigger rather than smaller. On Sat the pediatrician thought it was just a mild head bump, no big deal, but with the swelling increasing and also no sign of bruising (which you'd expect on a towheaded child if he'd bumped his head hard enough to make a knot this big--it's bigger than my palm), the drs are now worried about fluid from inside the skull instead. The good news is that he's happy and alert and active and eating well. It's not an emergency yet (always a relief to hear a neurosurgeon say that!) but he will probably need a CT scan. Which raises its own set of complications, since our dratted HMO won't cover anything at our local hospital and we'll have to take him to Richmond (80 miles away) for any necessary testing.
Prayers much appreciated, both for the baby and for the red tape!! (But mainly for the baby.)

Lissa,
I can totally relate to the insurance thing...our nearest hospital is an hour away, and all specialists covered by military insurance are 4 hours away...
Lots of prayers headed your way!

Last night I brought home (borrowed)a first class relic of St. Maria Goretti. Now that's she's here with us for a while I will take your dear Steven's needs to her. Also, although today is the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it is normally the feast of the Ugandan Martyrs, St. Charles Llwanga and Companions. The youngest of the martyrs was 13. I'll ask for their intercession!
God bless,
Gwen in Denver

Thanks so much for all your prayers. It turns out that Steven has a minor skull fracture. He lacks typical protective arm reflexes, so if he tumbles while walking, he falls right on his head. :( However, the dr said no intervention is required and it will heal in 6-8 weeks. The neurosurgeon said it's nothing to be too alarmed about. I said that was very encouraging and quite bizarre. His nurse burst out laughing and said, "Yes, that's exactly what it is. A linear skull fracture is very good news for Steven." The only follow-up they want is a CT & MRI in 4 wks, which works out perfectly with what we already had scheduled. Gotta hand it to the little guy, he timed it perfectly! But oh what scary words to hear: "your baby has a skull fracture." Who would have thought that that could be good news? LOL

Dear Lissa,
I am just reading all this now. I am so glad all is "well" and he will recover from the unfortunate fracture.

Lissa,
I'm so relieved (?!) that it's "only" a minor skull fracture .... Kiss him for us!
