More questions for you experienced mothers.

First, what skills do puzzles develop?

Secondly, what other activities help develop these same skills?

My ds is extremely adept at puzzles.... He loves them, all different kinds, so we do them quite frequently. When you find something a child loves, or does well, do you encourage that area, or do you try to steer him in some other areas to catch up with other skills?

When it's just one child, I have a lot of time to think about these things!!!

Hi Jenn!

Puzzles are great for learning observational skills, memory skills, problem solving, critical thinking and fine motor skills. When my girls were that age, they played with the Little People, blocks, Duplos, crayons, watercolors and playdough. I'm sure there are a few things that I'm forgetting.

At your sons age and the preschool age, I've always encouraged my girls in the area that they enjoy even if it seems like they were "stuck" there. I think that it is a need the child has to work through. When they got tired of that particular activity, I was ready for working on another skill.

Thanks, Mare. It does help... Also your list gave me some more ideas to work on. I'm now in search for a worktable for him so we can color. We were doing that on the floor, but it wasn't working well.

PlayDoh I still love...and I need to find or make a replacement that is wheat free, since he's allergic to wheat, including contact reactive. But I love the smell of PlayDoh, and it's hard to find a sub for that!
