Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK...time to think about next year and ds's math. He really, really dislikes spiral texts, so Saxon and Math-U-See are out.

He is weak on math facts, strong on geometry and problem solving...I am trying to work through the basics of pre-algebra next year and hopefully get to some of algebra as well. (We will get a review of multiplication facts as dd learns her times tables in grade 3...a good thing.)

Any thoughts? I am planning to look at the Key To...series but would really like to buy just one book. I can teach it...a DVD isn't necessary, although he might like it.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

I have used Key to Algebra with one son in 9th grade and am presently using it with my 7th grader.   I am certainly not a math expert, but it seems to me to be basically a pre-algebra with some light algebra incorporated.

I like the way it covers concepts one step at a time. Both DSS were floundering a bit with the spiral approach of Saxon and Key to is more a "building" approach where each concept is introduced, practiced and then used in the following steps.

MacBeth has said good things about Jacob's Mathematics: A Human Endeavour a review is here as a pre-algebra program. It is meant to explore basic mathematics for college students but can apparently be used for younger ages.

Hope you find something that helps, or rather found something since you probably have by now! I would love to know if you did find something different since I'll be trying to figure out what to do with my 7th grader next year and it's never too early to plan!

Just wondering...is Math U See really considered a spiraling program? My impression of it was always that it was mastery based...
