Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Macbeth would be so proud of me!!! We are actually doing the Bird Count this year!

Today (Monday) is the last day...you just count the birds in your yard over a set period of time (you decide) and go to the website and add your count. It's really easy. And fun!

The website is here.

They have some great bird photos to help you identify the birds you observe, too.

Try it!

Nancy,

this is the first year we have participated in this program and it has been SO much fun. We never realized how many different species call our yard home. By watching them for a few days we came to recognize which birds liked which trees, what time of day to expect them and what they prefered to eat. We will definitely be participating again next year!

PS -What did you all see? We posted our initial list but have had to add several late comers :-) A good friend of mine in Paris left her list as a comment to my post. I don't know French birds so I googled them and was shocked at how totally different they are from North American birds. A green wood pecker? Who would have expected that?

We've seen quite a variety...typical for Maryland...cardinals, sapsuckers, juncos, grackles, starlings, finches, wrens...a turkey vulture...and then our local red-shouldered hawk flew in and, well, bird watching ground to a halt for today! (Good and bad, I guess, since our hawk is a neighborhood fixture - I would have felt like the count was incomplete without her.)

European birds are indeed very different. We've lived in Italy twice and had all kinds of swifts and other birds we don't have here in the USA.

It's really fun to be able to recognize all the birds. If you like bird coloring pages, try this one! Dd did a huge bird study a couple of years ago and the bird coloring pages on this site were wonderful.
