Help! I cannot keep the tangles out of my daughter's hair. I use conditioner and brush it through before bed, but every morning she wakes up with this huge mass of tanlges on the back of her head. Does anyone have a solution? I would like to keep it long.

Jennifer,
I started braiding my girls hair before bed for just this reason. It makes it much easier to deal with in the morning and as a bonus it gives their stick straight hair some wave and body.

I second the braid before bed. My daughter's hair is so very fine, and she makes such a fuss when there's the slightest tug, and the braiding made all the difference!

Has she had a trim lately? I like to keep my girls' hair long, too. But after a long time between trims, there is just nothing I can do to keep it looking neat, even if we wash it and comb it out in the morning.
I am horrible at cutting hair, but I will trim their hair to make it fresh-looking again. It usually requires a couple of touch-ups . Usually the first couple of hair washings I try to straighten it up while the hair is wet. Not very efficient, but it works! And they look much neater!
I always joke that God must love practical jokes because he gave me five girls with straight fine hair when I can't braid to save my life!!

braids.. though if someone doesn't use it and has a dreadful tangle.. I find that rubbing a bit of normal condition on my hands and then onto their hair works real well.
and after washing with shampoo.. use the condition but be careful not to rinse it completely out.. you end up with hair that may as well not have had conditioner.. so rinse just enough to be the majority off but leave a fine coating on the hair. you might have to experiment with it.

This won't prevent tangles, but when you have to comb them out, use the biggest wide-tooth comb you can find. I have a blue one that says "tangle tamer" on it, I think you can get it at a beauty supply store. Also, you can make your own detangling spray for cheap. Get a pump spray bottle, like a hair spray bottle, or reuse the detangler spray bottle you already have. Fill it up about half way with the cheapest conditioner you can find, I use White Rain. Fill the rest with water. Shake well. Shake it before every use and spray those tangles before combing.

What about night caps? Think Little House on the Prairie. I commend your willingness to keep long hair, my 3 dd's would love long hair, but I keep it Bobbed, until they are old enough to take care of it themselves.

I've never tried this but I've heard using a satin pillowcase helps with the tangles. Does anyone know if this works?

I second Lorri's suggestion. I have very fine hair, but curly, too. I used to use Johnson and Johnson's "No More Tears" de-tangler/conditioner for babies/little ones. I was worried it would be greasy, but it was just like wetting the hair, only the combing went much easier.
