We are getting ready to make our Crowns of Thorns and put toothpicks in for Lent - I am not sure what clay to use - Crayola Model Magic, Playdough, Sculpey? Any other recommendation?

We have used Sculpey with good results. Haven't tried any others, so I can't give you a comparison.

When you used Sculpey, does it bend/break easily after cooking? We have had problems with it bending, crumbling, or breaking. It never seems to harden fully. We're following the directions on the box, but perhaps we just need to cook it longer than recommended? Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

We've always used salt dough with good results.

We just bought a grapevine wreath at the craft store for under a dollar- no mess and fuss- just stick in the toothpicks. we hang one on our door too.

I actually prefer the grapevine wreath, too. We go back and forth from year to year.
The only problem we have had with the Sculpey is when someone breaks it.  And it isn't cheap! I can't remember if we cooked it longer than recommended.
Does someone have the salt dough recipe? Probably much less expensive than Sculpey?
Good thread, got me moving to be ready for next Wednesday. Usually, I would be considering these things Tuesday evening!

Elizabeth,
One thing that might help is if you give the object some substance under the Sculpey -- for instance, using balled up foil or a wire armature or something. Also, don't do the clay too thin -- it will shrink as it cools and if the application is too thin, it will crack.
I've made all kinds of things from Sculpey and have rarely had a problem. I think Sculpey would be too expensive for a wreath; something better would be salt dough (which cracked for me last year ) or a straw wreath or something you can cover.

Hi Molly,
We're also using a grapevine wreath this year. I like the way it looks.
Here is the Salt dough recipe:
Ingredients
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
1-1/2 cups hot water (from tap)
2 teaspoons vegetable oil (optional)
Mix the salt and flour together, then gradually add the water until the dough becomes elastic. (Some recipes call for 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil at this point.) If your mixture turns out too sticky, simply add more flour. If it turns out too crumbly, simply add more water. Knead the dough until it’s a good consistency—then get out rolling pins, cups, bowls, straws, cookie cutters, plastic utensils, and let the fun begin!
If you want colored dough, mix food coloring, powdered drink mix, or paint into the water before adding it to the dry ingredients. Or you can paint your creations after baking them at 200 degrees. Baking times will vary depending on the size and thickness of the object, but make sure that all of it is hard. If the dough starts to darken before cooking is complete, cover with aluminum foil. Painted keepsakes will need to be sealed on all sides with clear varnish or polyurethane spray.
