Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, I've hit a brick wall. We did fine with most of the ancient literature I chose. However, as we move toward the Renaissance, I'm trying to find world lit in translation that isn't too risqué for my 15 year old son. I've found a version of Don Quixote that isn't too bad. Shakespeare, at least some, will be OK...not perfect, but OK. But...as I drag out my college and high school books, I'm heartily annoyed. So many choices just glorify awful behavior!

So, here I am...what has worked for you? I really need a few options from various places and times in world history. We've done some Japanese haiku (nice...but then dh found all the ones with gross words in them... ) and I'm definitely in the market for a Shakespeare play, but other than that the field's wide open...anything from 1500 A. D. on that is on a 9th grade reading level.

Thanks!

We have used a program called Smarr. They are at www.smarrpublishers.com. Very solid literature choices and writing work. They have Introduction to Literature; and I think British, American, and World Literature. They are Christian, but don't go way overboard with everything needing a Biblical connection in order to make any sense or have any merit. (I'm sure we've all seen programs like that; they tend to drive me crazy.) And they are reliable about not selecting the most outrageous and inappropriate things to read.

Please look at their website. Maybe they can help with your dilemma.

Peace,
Nancy
