Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi!

My daughter was just invited to see the ballet Giselle. She's a "young" 11 yr old and we are pretty conservative. Is this an okay ballet? My daughter knows the story line from a DK Ballet book. Is there anything weird in it? Anything inappropriate?

Thanks Muchisimo!

Well...the basic story is very tragic...I guess it depends on how the ballet is staged. The male lead (can't remember his name, sorry) wanders into the woods and meets up with the Wilis, who are all ghosts of girls betrayed by the men they've loved. He falls in love with Giselle and ends up dying as he's dancing with the Wilis.

So, there is enchantment and tragedy and death...but, as with most classic ballets, it's generally presented as a whole bunch of dancing and agonized facial expressions.

My mom let me see it when I was 8, but she didn't know anything about ballet. I did know the basic story then, and didn't find the ballet disturbing.

I hope someone who's seen it recently can comment.

I'd worry more if it were a "modernized" production, but if it's staged in the classic tradition it is probably fine. (Swan Lake is pretty tragic too, and my dd was fine with it at age 8.)

Oh Thank You! It is presented as classical. She knows the story line anyways. I just hate that I can't go with her. These tickets were bought a while ago and somebody in the party cancelled. So, these nice people called and offered to take Alyssa.

Guess what? I was feeling a little uncomfortable with dd seeing this with other people. I love this family, but such a special experience and I won't be able to share it. I also didn't want her to miss such an exciting opportunity. So...I decided to go too! Isn't it neat how God gives us solutions?!!

I will be able to ride up with them all and sit in the same section, but not in the same seats. But that's okay. We'll see each other in the intermission and on the ride to and back. Dh was very supportive. It did cost me! There are so many additional fees to the full price ticket, but it will be special and memorable.
