Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK the sad truth is I will be 40 on the 22nd!   Whew the cat is out of the bag, hope you don't mind me joining the forum a couple of days early     Since you are all full of wisdom I need some help! I have decided that we have had a hellish year and we survived so it is time to celebrate with all our friends who have supported us this past year.   So I am going to have a party, a no gift party but just a fun open house 1-5 after mass on teh 25th. Now for the wisdom part, since I live in Steubenville we have so many people we wnat to invite. The basic list including children is over 200! Hands down mostly children, I need nice inexpensive menu ideas!   I know everyone will ask to bring something so I want to have the menu set and know what to tell them to bring!   Including drink ideas!   Is 1 case of wine enough?

Molly, First of all HAPPY BIRTHDAY(a little early).
Second, welcome to the "tea room."
Third, my thoughts on menu ideas are limited for such a large crowd--a case of wine SEEMS enough to me but here are ideas that I have used for entertainment in the past for smaller crowds:
-Lots of lasagna(I usually buy the Stouffers in the family packs) ask others to bring the other stuff, such as salads, vegie tray, cut up fruit, breads, drinks, paper products(that is always a big help).
-Since it doesn't seem to be a mealtime have each family bring an appetizer type dish. This could be fun!
-spaghetti sauce or chili can be in crockpot while at church. People can bring rice or breads(garlic, cheezy, cornbread, whatever), salads, drinks, deserts, etc.
Have fun!
Anne

Molly,

I am not yet 40 but did throw a large party for my dh when he turned 40 two years ago. I made chili and sloppy joes in crockpots. I also did a huge pot of spaghettios for the kids...it was a soup pot filled to the brim. The cans were on sale at Wal-Mart and the kids thought it was a huge treat.

Many people brought wine and beer to the party which added to the stuff we bought. Dh has 6 brothers so they gave him tons of expensive beer as gifts. I put all the drinks in coolers in our attached garage...I just didn't need too many people in the kitchen.

We had beer, wine, juice boxes and hot apple cider in another crockpot! Dh's b-day is 2/1 so everything stayed cold. I know it will be in Steubenville...one good thing about graduation...no more damp winters...I tell you it feels colder there than Chicago!!!

Hope this helps..the post caught my eye! Have fun planning!!

Happy Birthday! We will be thinking about you.

God bless,

Marybeth

Another really good dish that goes far is Pumpkin soup and garlic bread, Homemade, and it freezes well.
Is Pumpkin soup a common dish in America? It is here and is really tasty with crusty bread and sour cream.

I hope I'm not being to Australian here.

Fried rice is another that you can make in bulk.
Creamy pasta with Bacon and Mushrooms is always filling and is yummy if you add some wine in the sauce.
Lots of herb or garlic Bread - it is a good one for the kiddies they also like little yummy finger food. Chilli Con Carne and rice is a nice bulk dish. The reason I like these recipes is that they can be frozen and they are made mostly in one pot - I like one pot cooking, saves on washing up. Caesar Salad is a nice side dish as is Potato salad. I agree with Anne lots of fruit, chips and dips, punches and some nice ice cream or sweets to finish up. Mousse or Trifle - well that might be being to Aussie.

I think I'm playing your party out in my mind, wishing it was mine.

God Luck have a great birthday!!!
C

DOn't forget yo ask people to bring paper supplies and plastic utinsils and cups.
Someone should also bring ice and a few coolers and ask around for a coffee urn.

Not sure how old your children are but wouldn't a morning/evening of cleaning up be a great gift?

Happy brithday, I love that you wish to share your survival of this past year with those that love you so.

Thanks everyone!   I had a great party....I served crepes, veggies, variety of finger sandwiches, hummus and pita and lots of fresh fruit.   Oh yes we had cheese trays and crackers.....tons of food left over! The crepes were a huge hit!!! Just in case anyone (Jenn) is having a big 40 soon

Did you make the crepes yourself? I tried to do that once and I couldn't flip them. What did you fill them with?

Happy Birthday!

Sounded like a great day.

I think I was a bit late with my offerings, I thought you had meant it was on the 22nd March - silly me.

You've given me a few ideas for mine.

How does it feel being "40". Of course GREAT!!

Congratulations again,
God Bless
