Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I had a question about a post on my blog that I didn't know the answer to, so thought I'd ask you more knowledgeable ladies.
I had set up a little rock washing activity on a tray for dd hereand the question was whether I would set it up in reverse for a left hander. I admit to never even considering handedness when I set things up and just habitually set them to progress from left to right (as in reading).
But I need to consider this now not only because of this question, but because my grandson is showing a preference for left-handedness.
I know alot of materials the child takes out and sets up on his/her own, but for things that I set up for them on a tray, like experiments and such, is there a proper way to set up trays of materials that depends on handedness?

I'm not much of an expert on Montessori although I'm trying desperately to learn more. However, I'm a lefty and it's never affected me to do things from left to right. Having said that it may be because I'm so used to doing things the "righty" way. I think it would make more sense to learn from the start to do things from left to right as you do almost everything. In Korea, the writing and reading used to be from right to left, up and down.

The only thing that used to really make things difficult for me were right handed desks and scissors.

Yep, I set things up in reverse for my 3 yo lefty. But I think it makes more of a difference with materials that require using water or other messy stuff, and activities like painting, writing, etc. For instance, if I set up his paints and water the way I would for myself, he has to reach across the paper to get to the paints and water. This is no good because he drips on the paper. So I have to remember to put his materials on the left.

In some things I don't think it matters too much, but if there's a lot of reaching involved it does seem to. You can try it as an experiment yourself.

Thank you Theresa, for bringing my question here. I forgot I asked it!! I'm going to do some observation and see how my lefty and righty do things differently.
