Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

First, two lovely women gushing all over the kids and many "Bless You"'s and then...I am not making this up...

One older lady saying, "Oh shut up" to my crying three year old.

Nice.

And best of all, 2 seconds after it happened all I could think of was running here to tell you all about it.

Love you all very much and know that I pray for all of you daily.

Were you at Safeway? I've had a lot of problems there. I'm convinced one of the cashiers hates me . . . .

Are you serious? No, I know you are but, no way! That lady needs some lessons in kindness/tact and definitely needs prayers.

I just can't imagine saying that to someone elses kid.   I probably would have gone all mamma bear on her.

I thought about it, and my 11 year old wanted me to "go after her." But then I thought what could I possibly say to this poor woman that would make a difference and I was afraid of what other lovely things might come out of her mouth...so I prayed.

And then listened to all sorts of lovely things come out of my dh's mouth when I told him about it.

You acted wisesly Maria. My initial reaction would have been "excuse me?" but your right... with the littles there, you have no idea what could have taken place.

I still just can't imagine saying it.

I know it's so hard to hear such harsh words spoken to your child, Maria, but honestly, you just have to feel sorry for a person like that. Anyone who would speak that way to child must have very little love or real meaning in her life. She has no idea of the joy that she's missing.

And you do---give thanks for that! How right you were to pray.

Incredible.
You handled it much better than I would have.

I just had this thought go off in my head...if she is an elderly lady....she could be in the beginnings of dementia, or early Alzheimers....it seems like some of these poor souls elude their family for the first months..years..and still have driver licenses...etc...and are out and about. Having worked with the elderly, sometimes their responses after having strokes, etc...are totally inappropriate, but are due to organic brain issues, instead of rotten attitudes.

NOW, that said, I CERTAINLY wouldn't have thought of all of that in the instant someone told MY child to shut up...after I picked up my jaw from the floor, I would have been hard pressed to restrain my own tongue!! See, now you can walk away with no guilt over a sassy response, and are a reminder to us all how to "ponder all things" in our heart, just like Our Lady!

God Bless,
4 Lads' Mom with babe due 09/08/07

I'm sorry Maria! Don't you just go into defense mode when you go to the store! The list of rude comments/reactions is endless! Those poor people...life has got to be so different for them.

I am a very peacefull person by nature... but I am very protective of my children. I wouldn't have caused an out and out scene but I probably would have quietly said something. Usually in those situations I go home and feel horrible about what was said, so Maria definitely handled it better than I would have.

4 Lads' Mom, very good point. I hadn't even thought of that but we had an elderly neighbor here who would shout things out once in awhile.

Yeah, my dh's grandmother has Alzheimer's...and her behavior is getting progressively weirder. She seems to be losing social skills and basic etiquitte. We were visiting recently and she said to my 4yod, "You're an ornery little s*%t!" She said it in a playful kind of way, but I was really surprised about the cuss word!

Another time, she and her dh came over to our house while my dh and his dad were doing some yardwork. I was inside, and had just lay down for naps with my 2 littles (and I was very pregnant w/ Clara). My 7yod was reading a book in the living room. Grandma S. just walked right in, and when dd told her that I was sleeping, she asked which room I was in and knocked on the door to wake me up!

Dawn

I am so sorry that happened to you. I once had a very harsh experience at a grocery store, I was pregnant and a drunk man started swearing at me.   It was horrible, I was shaking for days afterwards, and I too had my dc with me and they heard him. I said nothing in return to him, I could'nt I was so stunned. Please be assured of my prayers for you and for that poor women.

Now that 4 lads' mom pointed out one alternative.. another is also she could have been not taking some medication. We had a man at church have an outburst.. the doctor and a couple of other men escorted him out.. he's fine as long as he's taking his meds. And everyone at Mass heard him so we've done the explaining to the kids thing.
