I bet that subject line got your attention huh?
I am talking about babies that "explode" from the bottom end. My last two were this way and so it seems is my sweet little Maria. These babies can go for days without a bowel movement (Peter - now 5- went almost 2 weeks!) and then watch out because there is no diaper that can hold it!
They aren't constipated but calm and happy babies. They just don't "go" very often. Up until this time I really didn't have a clue why (though my PCP assured me this is normal for breastfed babies) but recently my friend Sally (a lactation consultant and very good friend) told me that it means the baby is getting lots of the fatty hind milk. Judging from my daughter's chubby cheeks I don't doubt this is true.
So I'm curious. Is this common for your babies or are we weird? Maria seems to be on an every 4 to 5 days cycle right now and yesterday was an explosion that went through the onsie, the sleeper, and two blankets!
I have also noticed that she doesn't wet much at night. Keep in mind that we co-sleep and she nurses through the night (though she slept 6 hours straight 2 nights ago!) but when we get up in the morning and I change her she isn't very wet. Then about an hour later she has a very full wet diaper. Granted this behavior is convenient in that I don't have to change her through the night and we don't go through as many diapers (or outfits!) as I have with previous babies but it also means that if it been 4 days and I need to go somewhere I think twice because she will most surely need a bath if the flood gates let loose!
Any tips for dealing with this? Can anyone relate? I find it odd to that my last 3 have been this way but not my first 7. I wonder what I'm doing differently, if anything?
I am sure in years to come my dd will be horrified to know that I am discussing her bladder and bowel habits online and I am equally sure that the boys won't care at all!

My first three didn't do this, but the last three did! Each one averaged 4-5 days before the "explosion." I think the longest anyone of them went was maybe 7 days? I can't really recall exactly, though.
I don't think I did anything very different from one to the next. And we didn't have any changes in bladder habits, that I can recall, so I am no help there.

Oh I considered it. The smell was like very strong vinegar too! But I did a quick hose down in the sink and threw everything in the washer right away. It's all clean now.

Michele -- your subject line reminded me of my oldest -- he was a day or two old, I was still in the hospital (I'd had a C-section) and little Joe (now 17!) exploded all over ...
The up-side was that I was still in the hospital and the nurse came and took care of everything! But, boy did that scare me being a new mother......

Michele -
Colin went 2 weeks without a bm and then same thing - KABLAM! My oldest was very regular and my second went longer between them but not as long as this little guy.
And we are having the same experience with the lack of really wet diapers in the morning. I was getting a little worried about it, but at his 2 month well check the other day, we found out he's gained 2-1/2 pounds, so he's obviously getting something, right? Now, while he's gained 2-1/2 pounds, he only weighs 8lbs, 12 oz - 3oz less than ds#2 when he was born!

Cindy,
I'm so glad to hear Colin is doing well! Maria is 2 months tomorrow. Where did the time go??
Mary, your new mother, exploding baby experience sounds like it would have freaked me out too!
Hey Stacy and everyone else who has responded...are your babies gassy a day or so before they let loose? I have noticed this with Maria.
Oh and I was so afraid she would have her "moment" when she was in her baptismal gown so I massaged her belly and did little leg exercises with her the night before and sure enough it worked...OK I prayed too so maybe it was that.
LOL on the every 10 minutes Caroline. I've had a few like that too!

Andrew did that...and I got so nervous (#8---can you believe it?) that I asked our doctor for advice and he said you may want to try a small glycerin suppository to make him more comfortable (he was grunting alot). Well, I did---and THAT did it! I think we did it two or three times total and that corrected it for good (or he outgrew it).
Of course, I think I'm always a little nervous about digestive issues after Joey and Clare. Bowel obstructions are serious things. I'm assuming she passed all of her meconium fine? And is gaining very well? No signs of dehydration? If not and the doctors aren't concerned about absorption issues, then she just stores it all up to....like you said: give you a nice surprise and make sure you're all awake and paying attention to her!

No words of wisdom, Michelle. It sounds like you are doing everything right and can take pride in all that rich hind milk! (JP is my most delayed pooper, too...interesting.)
Yep, your subject line got my attention!

Michelle,
My second child did this - my only dd. My pediatrician at the time ordered a barium enema for her (She was 6 weeks old). My friend who is a lactation consultant was livid. She couldn't believe I would allow it. I didn't know any better. Anyway, I watched on the screen as the barium went all the way through her intestines - no blockage what so ever. She just liked to wait and then explode I guess! Oh, and as far as gassy, yes! I could tell it would be coming in a day or two! My first ds and the two that followed never did this. Just my sweet dd. DH joked and said it sounds like something a boy would do more than a girl!

Oh Michele I didn't give you an answer did I? JP used to go 3-4 days with no BM and then his bm would be so hard on the poor guy -- and he was just on breast milk of course. The doctor said he'd grow out of it and not to worry ... it took till he was about 2 before his bm's leveled out (altho some days he goes without a bm) and as MaryM can attest -- he's PERFECTLY healthy and definitely ALL BOY!

Yeah, Colin is totally gassy the day before everything exits the building!
I was wondering where the time went myself just the other day. Not a newborn anymore

My dear friend's daughter (a twin) did just that
Her brother was baptized in his exquisite, satin gown. She wore a stunning white onesie. Her mom will never forget it - and still laughs about it now.
My oldest "exploded" regularly as well - our record was 14 days. After my La Lache League leader assured me that it was normal (on about day 10), I stayed close to home until the "moment" had passed.
Thanks for the reminder, Michelle. Not exactly the memory lane moments you think of first -- but it's neat to think about how far we've come. My little time bomb is 5.5 years old now. Time really does fly.

This is cracking me up. Oh, I needed this picker upper. Mine all were very regular. A couple were too regular (went often--every hour). Wow, I'd freak out if it went longer than two days.

Yes, yes, yes! I've had exploding babies before, but my 4 month old is the first, um, what I will delicately call "delayed exploder". Having so many days go by between messy diapers made me worry a bit at first too.
I don't tend to put the outfits in the wash right away. I rinse them thoroughly in the sink and use some hand soap to get out some of the worst of the yellow stains. Then I just wash them on my regular baby laundry day with detergent and Oxiclean. I'm often amazed that the onesies come out so clean without chlorine bleach when they went into the wash looking so yellow!
Since we have a history of exploding diapers in the early months, I was very excited to find this brilliant invention. I've been using it since the beginning with this baby and assumed that I'd save a lot of work in washing the infant car seat cover. Would you believe that she hasn't had an explosion yet while in her car seat?! But I'm ready . . . .

Irene,
Didn't I read in another thread that your littlest one is quite gassy? I wonder if it's related? This past weekend we were at a retreat and Maria was SO gassy. Not that it seemed to bother her but boy was she noisy and whew what a smell! A few days later she had a blow out and is now not gassy at all.
It's funny but I was actually thinking of you during the retreat!

Somehow I knew what you meant before I clicked on the thread
A lot of ours were like that; dh and I thought it was normal. I didn't know there are many babies that don't explode!

And yes, that happened to us with one of ours, it ended up all over my dress too.
I don't recall them being gassy before hand. Also, my 2 yo dd isn't one of the "exploders" but she also stays very dry at night. Now as the mom of 6 previous bedwetters, I'm hoping this trend lasts until she is out of diapers.
