Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

All this week my son has gotten these bug bites which turn into huge pink welts! I am not sure what is biting him. He loves to be outside but is complaining of being itchy and is really miserable at night. I put hydrocortisone cream on the bites several times a day. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it!
Thanks!
God bless,
Marybeth

He could be allergic to the bug bites. Try putting Benadryl gel or taking Benadryl orally (you're not supposed to do both) to see if the swelling goes down and the itching subsides somewhat. That will give you some direction in how to treat it.

Mary Beth, just a week ago, my daughters and son had the exact same thing, exact same. I was so convinced that something was biting them that I called an exterminator! It turned out not to be bug bites at all (although it really looked like them), but a plant allergy. It wasn't poison ivy, but a reaction to one of the other plants in our yard. The pediatrician explained that, in the spring, some plants exude chemicals that may cause a reaction like this. He put my daughters on prescription strength anti-histamine and prescribed a strong cortizone cream for all three. This cleared the problem up fairly quickly, although, if it hadn't, he was planning to prescribe a steroid.

By the way, my 11-year-old had by far the worst allergic reaction. The welts covered half her face and looked horrible. The pediatrician asked if she is ever around plants. I told him the kids are outside every day and then added, "Do you think the fact that she has been the medicine woman in an ongoing game they've been playing with the neighbors might have something to do with it?" He smiled broadly and said, "That'd do it!" Needless to say, Allie has been instructed to stop collecting "medicinal herbs" in the yard!

Thank you both so much. I am going to give the dr. a call in the morning. I think we may need to get a prescription. He just looks awful this evening. Poor little guy! Again, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. God bless!

Marybeth, I just read your original email aloud to my husband, and he was astounded because it sounds exactly like what we were saying last week. We will pray for your son, and I hope the prescription helps.

Well, I talked to the nurse today who was very reassuring and helpful. We are going to try oral Benadryl plus some hydrocortisone cream for today. If he isn't feeling better by tomorrow then we will see the dr. She seems to think the reaction is to foliage! Thanks for that tip Alice.

Thank you all again for the suggestions and most especially the prayers.

I am so glad to hear you had some reassurance. We had some reassuring news at the pediatrician today as well. I'm about to update my prayer request for baby Cecilia.
