I am driving through Kansas on my cross country trip in Spring. I am driving on I-70.
Is there anyone can tell me if there is anything special to see or do near I-70? an hour off the highway is okay, too.
Dawnie..........why do ya have to live so far from 70? 
Anyone else live in Kansas?

Hi, I've lived in Kansas all my life. I'm sorry to say, but there isn't much to do off of I-70 from Denver to Kansas City! (sad...I know) But, once you reach Kansas City,KS. there is a Cabela's, a Nebraska Furniture Mart (HUGE store) a Great Wolf Lodge, which is an indoor water park (my kids' favorite place in the world!) and a new outdoor shopping area that's really nice. Oh... and several yummy restaurants! But, honestly, I went to college in Manhattan, Ks., so I made the drive down I-70 several times and the drive is boring, until you get to Kansas City, that is. (sorry!)

Why don't you just drive across the country on US400? That goes right through Wichita!

I'm from Kansas and grew up just north of I-70 though now I live further south, not far from Dawn.
Cathedral of the Plains is gorgeous, and is in Victoria, in western Kansas. You can see it from the interstate. I would definitely make a stop there!

Chari -- I was going to mention this spot too. It's a mile off I70 and really is pretty cool. A few years back I did an article in the National Catholic Register on visiting this lovely shrine ... which I can send you a copy of if you're interested (it's too far back to be accessible from the NCR's archives  ). Here is a link to the parish of St. Fidelis which is the official parish name of the Cathedral. Way cool!

Well, we're just 10 miles north of I'70, so if you want a great lunch and some fun run-around time with kids, I'll send you our phone number and we'll set it up! I live in rural Wamego (near Manhattan, Angela!) and love it here. Here in Wamego, we have the Oz Museum if you are a Wizard of Oz fan (really good collection) and a lovely park to run and play in, with neat museum buildings on the edge of the park, including a real (tiny) log cabin moved from the countryside, a real one-room schoolhouse, country store, working windmill to grind delicious ww flour, and museum. Forty-five minutes east is Topeka, and there are at least two good things to see there: the Kansas History museum which my kids love, and the wonderful museum at the school that was the center of the Brown vs Board of Education case--very moving multimedia displays about that whole time period and the problems of integration, and a really good bookstore. And if you love nature, just a bit southwest of Manhattan (about 30 min from my house) is the Kanza Prairie Research station, where we had the most perfect day last fall--gorgeous scenery, a bison herd (with babies!)--google it and see. If you like bison, there is a bison ranch about 20 minutes north of my house where the owner loves kids and loves to tour people around and teach them.

The longest trip of my life was I-70 between Denver and KC when we burned up the catholitic converter (sp?) and could only go 45 miles an hour with no AC stopping at obscure garages trying to figure out what was wrong with the car (we didn't get a diagnosis untill nearly home) It was like some horrific Steinbeck novel come to life.
Though my comatose state might be blamed on trying to cram the History of Philosophy into 611 miles.
Driving Across Kansas might help.
Cross Nebraska instead, the Sandhill Cranes will be there March 9 - April 1 (prime season) when is your crossing this Spring? You really shouldn't miss the Sandhill Cranes.

Hey all, its Dawn's DH, Matt. I may have to get an account here but I have to respond to this thread. Their is sooo much to do on I-70 in Kansas.
Their are the Chalk Pyramids, Castle Rock (though its crumbling but still good fossil hunting), St Fidelis Church (the Cathedral of the Plains) and many other beautiful Churches (one in Munjor close to Victoria. A historical spot from the Civil War is Park Kansas (100 miles from the Colorado border, it used to be called Buffalo Park and was were a company of black soldiers rallied in the civil war and you can still find some of their tombs in the protestant graveyard in the middle of a wheatfield in town), the childhood home of Bob Dole in Russell, the sternberg muesum and from the research I have done the world's first two story Kentucky Fried Chicken in Hay's Kansas. Just north of collyer about 15 miles on US-24 I believe is the first sheep farm in kansas. Their is a car musesum just outside of hays. Lindsborg (a swedish community) is just south of salina along with the smoky hill bomb range and Kanapolis lake where Mushroom rock is located. Fort Riley and the Manhattan area has some beautfiul views. Lawrence has a lot of Basketball sport history. Abilene has a presidential library (Dwight D. Eisenhower) and the greyhound racing museum (if its still open, i haven't been their in 18 years). Salina has a truck stop called russells that has great chicken fried steak.
Their is a book called roadside kansas you might be able to find in the library that goes mile marker by mile marker. If you are interested in something in the salina or abilene area we might be able to sneak up from wichita (just over an hour from I-70) if it falls on one of my days off or if I can get time off (have a vacation freeze coming up do to us moving into the new center at work).

Oh! Jennifer: Love your Steinbeck comment!  Must have been a really LLOOONNNGGG trip. Thanks for the link.....I am checking it out now......great title for a link How did you know our family just LOOOOOOOOVVES sandhill cranes??? We will not be there at the right time though We have a rare pair that has been living in our meadow for the last five yrs or so.......WAY cool when we spot them.
And, finally.....Matt: THANKS SO MUCH for sharing your great knowledge of Kansas! I am writing all of this down. That would be amazing! What a cool bird that would be to add to the Great American Bird Count 3 robins, 6 sparrows, 14 juncos and a pair of Sandhill Cranes!!!

Chari, the Prairie Museum in Colby was one of the highlights of our trip in October...we missed the Cathedral of the Plains but we loooved our longish visit to the PM. I can look for my post about it later.
