We've just moved to a very remote Christian Brothers boarding school, in outback Western Australia. All the staff live on the property as we are 90 minutes drive from a town. My husband is a teacher, and I homeschool our two teenagers. The school has 80 students, mostly indigenous boys from remote communities who have never attended a structured school. The school teaches grades 8-12, so the boys are aged between 13 and 18.
We have our own chapel (St Mary's) here at the school, and because our priest travels to 4 other remote towns over the weekend, we have our Sunday Mass on Friday nights.
I have been asked by the RE teacher to source some new songs or hymns for the students to sing during Mass, and also to start a small choir.
I am a Catholic convert, though my husband is a cradle Catholic who has come home to the Church in the last year. (Yay!) Could anyone help me with some CD titles or songs that are relevant to the Mass, please?
The songs need to be fairly simple as these boys can only read at grade 1 or 2 level, though repetition will help them remember the words over time.

The Adoremus Hymnal has a CD set of all the music.

My dd is in charge of the children's choir at our parish, and it has been a great experience. Choosing music for Mass is a weighty responsibility! I think this hymnal makes it a bit easier.

Definitely go with the Adoremus hymnal, over the others out there... (Particularly the "Worship" and "Gather" hymnals).

I agree completely. Our church uses both Worship and Gather. Yuck.

We use the St. Gregory hymnal sporadically during our homeschooling days for singing hymns that correspond with the liturgical season.

Elizabeth, does the St. Greg have a CD? I love the selections in the St. Greg, and a CD is so nice to have.

No, unfortunately our St. Gregory hymnal did not come with a CD. 'Twould be nice. I just plunk out the hymn on the piano. (Emphasis on plunk.)

Hi Jenny,

One of the simplest forms of liturgical music to learn is Gregorian chant.
This website should give you lots of information. (And there are music files there as well.)

St Cecilia Schola Cantorum

If you follow the "Jubilate Deo" link, there are links to resources (free) for parishes and groups. And also some teaching tools for chant.
