What materials do you use to repair torn books, broken binding, or other issues.
We seem to have quite a few heartbreaking book wounds here with our toddler "reading."
I have some hard back covers completely off and packing tape doesn't seem like the solution. One was a book given to me when I was 8yo (Beatrix Potter).
Some of the books are out of print. . .
I need to set up a book triage center with supplies ready before the pages get further damaged or lost.
Any ideas on what to use or how to repair. (Does this happen at other people's houses?? )

oh it happens.. books are well "loved" at our house.. I don't know what you should use.. but I use packing tape or duct tape.. duct tape seems to make an excellent new binding for some books.. especially if I catch it before it's too bad.. though I used strapping tape on the binding of my most used cook book.. ran short strips over the binding.. so that the strength of the tape is holding it together.
I know there's better ways.. and ways to reglue the binding.. but I haven't had time to learn that.

What do libraries use? Isn't there a cloth tape or book binding tape? I know I have an extremely old copy of The Secret Garden that I would like to fix.

You could always ask at the library...
There's also a library supply place, Demco - demco.com [somebody please tell me how to post a link].
I order materials from them. Good customer service. You can request a catalogue (my favorite way of doing things!)

Tami to post a link you:
1- click on that globe in the toolbar in the messge section
2-then type in what you want to call the link (that will be the blue words people click on)
3-then press "OK" then another box will come up and that is where you put the address. Click "OK"
I usually have the other link opened in another window and copy & paste the address in. We usually tell you if your link doesn't work so you can fix it if that's the case.
In your message window your link might look like a bunch of garbled stuff. Don't erase any of it even if it looks strange.
I remember the days the 4REAL friends helped me figure out a link. . .

Sarah,
I just read about this in Home Comforts
by Cheryl Mendelson.
If you can get your hands on the book, she gives a very differentiated and thorough explanation.
good luck

Yes Tami's idea is the Best Ask your libraries for the details for their suppliers, I did for here and they sell the cloth tape, I also buy my book covering plastic rolls and sticky tape from them.
Some books you can sipmply use normal wood, craft glue to glue back in. I contacted a book binder here who repaired books (and charged like a 'wounded bull') and he said to do that. I mean books like old Penguins that the glue gets old and comes apart from the cover.

Tami-
You're link worked perfectly.
I'm excited to set up an (out of reach ) basket for book repairs that I can hopefully use to repair books right away. I don't know how many times I let repairs go and lost the pages/covers.

For page tears, use book tape. It is clear, wide tape but doesn't have the tendency to yellow like regular tape. We keep a roll on hand at all times, because if you catch the tear quickly, you minimize the damage.
I also think an early introduction into how to turn the pages as a rite of passage to the regular books is a great idea.
