Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Okay, I feel kind of silly asking this, but hope someone has an answer for me (since Google didn't help me at all ).

I have been feeling a very strong draw and devotion to Mary. I went to our local Catholic Shop the other day and purchased a statue of Mary to have in our home. It says that it is Our Lady of Grace. What exactly does that mean? I understand something like Our Lady of Fatima or Our Lady of Lourdes, but couldn't find anything about what makes a statue Our Lady of Grace.

Anyone, anyone? I'd appreciate any insight into this. Thanks!

I've never looked into an explanation behind Our Lady of Grace but I have to say she's my favorite. To me she always has the most beautiful expression of all the images.

I don't know either, but I used to belong to a parish dedicated to Our Lady of Grace and St Teresa, so I'd like to hear the answer!

Here are some articles that explain the title of Mary, Mediatrix of all graces:

EWTN- Mediatrix of all graces

Catholic.net- Mediatrix of all graces

Maybe this will help. I'm not sure if that's what you needed

I think....(I maybe wrong here) Her outstretched arms are the rays of grace that she pours out upon the earth. It always makes me feel peaceful inside when I hear that. I also need to do more research

Cindy, it's a good question, and I'm at a loss for an exact answer.

For some reason I have a nagging thought that the title of Our Lady appearing to St. Catherine Laboure is sometimes called "Our Lady of Grace". But I'm not sure...I only found one reference to the Paris apparition (Miraculous Medal to St. Catherine) at Mary's Gardens being referred.

The title of "Our Lady of Grace" or "Mother of Graces" is an old one, and had two feast days attached, and the one, "Mediatrix of Graces" was a later addition (Benedict XV).

Does she look like the miraculous medal image, with arms outstretched? Or hands folded looking up to heaven?

Cindy,
The only thing I have for you is the prayer card I read to you yesterday. Since the prayer is in the voice of a little boy, it seemed perfect for your house. It doesn't *say* OLG on it anywhere but MaryM sent it to me and she labelled it so. Perhaps MaryM can shed some light on this. Also, I have an Our Lady of Grace statue. You can see it here. It's really a bird feeder but I use the shallow pool in the bottom for holy water. The only way I know it's OLG is because it's labeled that way.

I believe Jenn is correct about the Appearance to St. Catherine L. associated with OLg.

FWIW,

Yes, that's right, Jenn. St. Catherine saw Our Lady with arms spread at her sides (the pose of the Miraculous Medal image), the graces she wants to give the human race shining like rays from her outstretched hands.

Aha! and the prayer card Mary sent me has Mary with outstretched arms, palms up, with rays of light coming from her hands!

I just wrote down how the cards were labeled at the Catholic Store where I got them    and it was the name that was commonly tied to it on-line.

Last year I spent several weeks tracking down images of Our Lady under various titles for our ornament project. I found the OL of Grace image tied to OL of Miraculous Medal like Jenn and Alice pointed out. I can't figure out the specific sites where I got info off the top of my head. I haven't much time as we are leaving for the afternoon, but when I get back I'll check around.

I think this explanation of the meaning behind a title of OL of Grace by Fr. Lovasik is very beautiful. There is another different image that has the same title. I've read about our OL's milk representing grace given to us through her. I want to find out more about that.

You ladies never cease to amaze me! Okay, now I'm really thrilled, because the Miraculous Medal is the first birthday present I gave to my husband (fiance at the time) because he had a gold-plated one and I wanted to get him a really nice one.

When I read MaryM's post and went to read what Fr. Lovasik wrote, I saw that her feast is on June 9th - the day after my birthday. I think I was guided to this particular image to have in my home!

It's funny, Cindy. The image of OLG has always been a beautiful one to me. I've mentioned my lack of Marian devotion (not lack of love but lack of devotion ) in this thread. Now I now exactly which Marian imagge speaks to me, beckons me.    I feel guided to this particular image too.
