Well, I was already to try Winston Grammar with my 7th grade ds who just isn't getting it with any other program. Then, someone suggested Shurley English. She says her kids really like it. So, has anyone used Shurley that can tell me about it? I'm just wondering if starting in the 7th would be too late? If you've used both of these programs and could compare the two I would be forever grateful!

Hi Becky,
We've used both, but it has been sooo long since I did the Winston, I am going to have to pull it out to recall what didn't work. All I can remember is it just didn't click with the boys.
We use Shurley Grammar. I guess what has worked with the boys is that is always reviewing what was taught previously. They start going over the most basic of sentences, and then as they progress each week, longer sentences are added, with more parts to identify, including all those already learned.
Can you believe I was thinking about grammar when I fell asleep last night? I was thinking about Shurley and whether there was something missing. I don't know that it goes "deep" into some areas. And my dss highly dislike the "jingles" they use. But, repeating myself here, the constant review of sentence structure is what helps.
It is the only program that my now 16yods "got."
Maybe a year of Shurley and then switching to another curriculum would be helpful? I know Rod and Staff is supposed to be a good one.
Unless someone else posts on Winston grammar, I will dig it out this pm and take a look.
God Bless,
Stacy in MI

Thanks Stacy. I did hear that Shurley, in the opinion of some, is not comprehensive enough in the upper levels, beyond grade 6 or 7. I was actually thinking of just using something like Shurley or Winston for this year (7th) to get my ds up to par so that we could go onto something a little "more". I was hoping to use Easy Grammar Plus with him for 8th grade, but I know if we go into it at this stage, we're going to have the same problems that we are having now. I was thinking that I needed something totally different then Voyages or even Easy Grammar, at least for a while. Does that make sense? My main goal is to get him ready for highschool grammar.
I had another thought about these two programs. I wonder if they "cater" if you will, to different learning styles. I know my younger ds would eventually (like in about 5 or 6 years!) love something like Winston, because it seems more "hands on". Maybe Shurley would be better for an auditory learner? The jingles make me think that.
Just thinking out loud here, and trying to make a decision. Thanks for your help!

Hi Becky,
You've hit the nail on the head, I think. Winston is hands on. My oldest ds really enjoyed it (well, maybe not enjoyed ) but it worked well for him. My middle dd liked Winston all right, but she learned more from Grammar Songs. With my youngest dd, 6th grade, I just switched to Shurley, we had been using Grammar Songs and Lingua Mater. She likes the jingles. I like that grammer, writing and vocabulary are all in one place (although the vocabulary words are too much for her, I use Vocabulary Cartoons, instead). I'm really pleased with the writing, it's very straight forward.
