Can we talk summer skirts, tops and shoes, please?
I've got winter covered in this new wardrobe but am clueless about summer  . What do you all wear and where to you shop?

Summer for me in dresses has usually been pretty cinchy. I'm begining to re-think some of my previous choices though. I have bought a few summer maternity dresses on ebay, and 2 long khaki skirts. I am sure to always wear sleeves, I haven't come the the 3/4" sleeves conclusion as of yet, but it's nagging at me. A light cotton slip, and I don't wear hose/tights in the summer, I am the barefoot/pregnant type!  Dresses are always so much cooler than pants or capris. (shorts are out of the queation!!) But, when we go camping/hiking/biking, I have been known to wear a knee length dress over a pair of capris.

My summer wardrobe has consisted of LLBean tshirt dresses in every color. That said, now I have nothing for summer because I can't nurse in any of those dresses! Wonder how long this thread can get  ?

I agree that for the summer dresses and skirts are the way to go. I even wear them working in my garden with no problem. I look for light weight (not see-through) fabrics. For me, simple is better. My all time favorite skirts are just cotton with an elastic waist. ry comfortable, very cool and they look nice too. For just around the house I wear t-shirts that match. I don't go sleeve-less but I do wear short sleeves. Blouses look great when I want something a little dressier. I often try to hit the bargains at Orvis. For shoes, it's definitely sandles (no heel for me) and I don't where hose either. My skirts are usually long enough that my white legs don't show too much!
We camp/hike alot and I've never had much of a problem with skirts, as long as they give enough so I can climb or whatever. Sometimes it's a good idea to wear long shorts or capri length leggings underneath. One thing I will add though is that I do have a pair of khaki pants that I save for canoing. Our canoe flipped once while I was in a skirt and it was anything but modest trying to get back in! I'll never do that again! But really, that's the only time skirts are better for me in the summer.

Don't know if it will work or not. If not, you can just go to www.orvis.com and do a search for "sweetwater blouse". That should work. I have several of them. I also want to say that I think Orvis is quite expensive, but if you can get things on sale they have really nice, high quality skirts and tops.

I am sooo close to making the switch to almost all skirts, so I will read this with interest. I've been paying attention to how I feel and act when I'm wearing a skirt, and of course how comfortable I am and there is definitely a difference. My favorite skirts are these cotton knit ones from Lands End. I wear them year round, but really should get more. In fact there are some on sale in overstocks right now...

Summer is so much easier. Light skirts and simple cotton shirts. Sandals. I camped in skirts last summer.
You still need a cotton slip under most skirts but it's cooler than shorts i think.
My hope this summer is to find more elbow length shirts as Helen mentioned somewhere.

I just checked out the Orvis site. WOW this is the best selection of skirts I have ever seen. How exciting! I am also feeling the tug at my heart in the way that I dress. You usually find me in a pair of jeans because of the farm chores. But then the ladies back in the day always wore skirts to do everything, they didn't have a choice. But that is an entirely seperate thread  Thanks Becky great site. They have beautiful tops also. Happy shopping!

Summer is easy for me. I just switch to lighter weight fabrics with long length tee shirts for around the house and blouses for when I go out.
I sew a very easy pattern that is most of my skirts. Measure around the biggest point in the middle, add 3 inches for seams and ease. That is the waistband. Then i double the measurement for the hem width. For example 33 inch waist (not mine  ) plus 3 inches so 36 inches on top, and 72 inches on the bottom. I divide the widths into 6 panels, so for this example 6 inches on top and 12 and the bottom. That is the pattern piece. For me, I like 36 inch length, so each piece is 38 inches long - 1 extra inch for the waist and 1 for the hem. Elastic for the waist. I can sew one in about an hour.
I hope that was understandable.

LeeAnn - it makes sense but don't you need more width? how do you get the skirt on if you have a 33 inch waist and only a 34 inch waist band (by the time you get seams in).. bust and hip will be bigger than 34 inches I would think.
Instead of just a cotton slip.. a split skirt as slip can solve any rubbing leg problems.
I prefer a denim or twill for camping.. it's less likely to move where I don't want it (too close to a fire or such)
And while I wear sandles most places.. some of the slip on tennis shoe type shoes that you wear without socks can be real nice for camping and other outdoor stuff.

Lisbet... oh those are supposed to be very comfy.. my MIL got the kids some last summer.. I might have to try some myself (As well as figure out who can wear what we have and who needs new ones of the kids)

Jodie, Sorry I meant to say, add 3 inches to your widest measurement. I usually serge these, so I use less seam allowance, if you use a traditional 5/8 ths seam allowance, I would think 5 inches would be needed for ease.

I forgot to add.. I like having a couple of loose dresses/jumpers for those really hot days when even a waist band is annoying.

When I wake up in the morning I put on socks and sneakers. They stay on until I go to bed at night. That is the only way I feel productive. What do you usually wear shoe wise with your skirts?
I guess I could wear socks and sneakers, I don't know how nice it would look though.
