Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ok - I'm back at re-looking at Math texts. We've switched to Jacob's Algebra for our highschooler. But our 6th grader is still doing Saxon and it is driving us both nuts. Has anyone seen Holt math and are their TM still available for 1981 and before?

My 4th grader is doing Singapore math - (3B) but just came upon a word problem in the liters/ etc. section that involves multiplying with carrying. Now as far as I can see it was never taught in the book - and this child just kept tinkering till he figured out the answer - but then put the book aside and didn't tell me about frustration. I explained the idea of how to do this, etc.and we've pulled Saxon back out for some practice problems but - did I miss something in the Singapore text or was it just an oversight on their part and mine.

I really need for them to work fairly independently in math with good text explanations of concepts and then we play around with same things in games, activities, etc. later (mostly because I have a bunch of children all over the place math wise). So what do people use for upper level elementary math and beyond and why?

We use Saxon and MUS. Our main text is Saxon, and then, for those troubling areas that crop up, I take a time out from Saxon, and go over the MUS.

With Saxon, I do not follow it, exactly. I am not sure what you are coming up against in it, but we don't use the fact sheets everyday. They have to do all of the practice problems, but only the odd problem sets on odd days, and evens on even days.
For my oldest three, this will probably be fine. I am seeing that my fourth will probably benefit from a MUS focus, and adding in Saxon as needed.
The Saxon D.I.V.E. have been really helpful.

God Bless,

I'm not much help really - we use Australian texts and some used Saxon and some use Kumon. Plus we like books like the Figure it Out series and Math By Kids for problem solving...Most of these are indepedent study, which I like since it helps with study skills - they learn to study/read/work through a problem and not to rely on a tutor/teacher.

My kids are only in Pre-K and 2nd, but we use a program called Mastering Mathematics. Their S&S claims to carry all the way through 8th grade. So far, we have not had any problems with it.
