Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As I continue the process of applying real learning in out home I have now come to where I wonder about the study of religion and our Catholic Faith.
We used Faith in Life for many years. I thought it was great. Then I discovered Seton's books. I like those better and so did the kids. Now I'm wondering if its time to let those go as well...

Here's what I like about them. They cycle through roughly the same material every year, always adding more depth. I like that the daily lessons are short. I like that I don't need to worry that I will "forget" to teach them some essential teaching of the Church.

But, my kids don't love those books. My older girls are reading Amy Welborn's Prove It books right now. They LOVE those. They ask to read them. And the more I think about it with them, why not start taking small chunks of the Catechism and reading and learning these together? Why not just read the multitude of saint's lives?
My first grader hates the Seton book. Actually she hates almost all textbooks. She loves Catholic Treasure Box and her picture Bible and the Catholic Mosaic books. Why not just read and talk and have fun and learn prayers?
My son will do anything I ask him (3rd grade). But he loves sitting and reading with me. Why not just read Marigold Hunt's books together, learn prayers, bible history...You get my point.
They all love the hands on stuff. Our units through Advent and Christmas were so much fun and simple for ALL of us to work through, but I look back and we did and learned sooo much.

Long post...but I guess I'm thinking out loud and asking...for those that are "text" free, did you never use them, suddenly stop or slowly gain confidence that the domestic church naturally passes on the faith and the concern over the right textbook series doesn't matter.

And one secondary question, opinions about Moira Farrells's books...because I think these may give me the "big picture" I'm looking for.

I love your line of thinking. When my older two were youn and I had never heard of Charlotte Mason, we didn't use a catechism or religion text. We read Treasure Box books, attended daily Mass, prayed the rosary and spent time in the chapel just talking and reading. We spent time at home just talking and reading and discussing our faith as it came up daily.

Then we moved and I was surrounded with homeschoolers who used religion workbooks and I all of a sudden feared that I would miss teaching the kids something important because we didn't use a magic text. So we started working through Faith and Life, St. Joseph's Baltimore and Schuster's Bible History.

My younger two are now the ages that my older two were in paragraph 1 above. We are going back to our old and proved methods -- exactly what you've outlined in your text free thoughts above -- and will let the workbooks take a back seat.

I can't help with Moira's books, as I've not used them.

I just received Moira's books, I have not implemented anything yet, I am still looking through them, but I can not wait to get started.
These are lessons that need prep before hand but once that is done it is done and you will have it to reuse. What you would say is scripted, which helps me a lot. (What I think in my head and what actually comes out are two totally different things sometimes ) Very visual and hands on which my gang will love. HTH

Dear Maria

I have been wanting to respond to this for ages - with our plans - just not had the energy for a long post. I am hoping this weekend - it is something I have been thinking about and wanted to share.

(BTW - I love your online name - my husband calls me Ms Clavel!)
