we are going to cape cod in july - specifically to visit the burgess nature center in sandwich. i'm trying to get our cottage booked soon and need some help. i'm not familiar with the area at all. if you wanted to stay in an oceanfront cottage/condo and still be near the burgess center, where would you go? any suggestions on other places to visit while we are there? thanks!

Mary, did you try Cyber Rentals? They have 21 listings in Sandwich, with some on the water. My cousin lives in Sandwich...it's quiet and nice.
What we have done is get a cottage on a pond, go to the beach in the morning, and spend the afternoon by the pond. These cottages on ponds tend to be less expensive. We have also camped. Anything on the water will be more.
We have stayed in Falmouth, too. You can visit all kinds of places, including Woods Hole, ferry over Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket, the National Seashore, shop at the Christmas Tree Shop (year round). Read Thoreau's Cape Cod and retrace his steps. Go whale watching out of Provincetown (though you might want to avoid P-town proper). You are not too far from Plimouth Plantation, too, though traffic can be a nightmare. Barnstable is fun if you like antiques. Of course, fishing is everywhere.

Oooh, we honeymoooned in Sandwich! It was beautiful! We always talk about going back. Our 10th anniversary would have been ideal, but we'll have a newborn baby instead
Anyway, it's not a cottage or condo, but we stayed at the Dan'l Webster Inn.
We didn't know about the Burgess Center back then...

macbeth, yes, i'm looking at cyberrentals. i hadn't thought about being next to a pond. since we live in cincinnati, when we vacation, we kinda like to be as close (on!) the beach as we can, especially when we are dragging beach stuff for 4 small children. then we spend the afternoon at a pool. being near a pond sure would open up cottage options and fit into our burgess themed vacation, but i'm not so sure my dh would be as excited - since he would be the pack horse to the beach!
how long would it take to get from sandwich to provincetown? when you say traffic is a nightmare - what does that mean exactly? how ugly are we talking? would there be whales in july? (oh that would be so thrilling for us landlubbers!)
noreen, what a lovely place to honeymoon!

We were there in late April, and we just missed the whale watching time, if I recall correctly. We did, however, see a half eaten (?) seal washed up on the beach.

Hmmm. The whales come with no guarantee . It is a fun boat ride, but the last time I went we saw a tuna .
Sandwich to P-town is about an hour, I think. Cape residents correct me, please.
Traffic is an issue on weekends, especially. Rts. 6 and 6A are not big highways, but local roads. There are no back roads to take when traffic is stopped, and I mean stopped . Gas is not cheap (if you go to MV or Nantucket, leave your car behind)...
I know what you mean about dragging everything to the beach. You might be way happier on the beach itself. I hope it works out!

Here's one link for whale watching. I don't know if the dates on the website match up with your plans.

a tuna would be pretty exciting too, but a whale would be spectacular. noreen, those sightings are during july - yeah, we could see a whale yet!
i called the hubby and he's set on oceanfront. i'm having trouble now finding oceanfront with a pool.
