We're making an Easter Cross from our Christmas tree. If you still have yours and you have a young man who would like to join in, check my weblog and we'll take it in installments.

This is when I regret having an artificial tree.
(Not to give away details in case it's the same craft. A couple of days ago, I saw a craft in an Easter book I have that suggests using the trunk of your Christmas tree & candles....so gorgeous!...had me considering a trip for wood. )

Sorry about that Stef... I had to turn on moderation again. I got a linkback from a totally disgusting site the other day...
I checked the wrong box apparently. It's all set now.

Here I was thinking I was original. I first posted this last year on one of my emil lists. Sounds like the one in your book is for a table? The one we're doing is for the door or front yard... I might have to snitch the candle idea, thoough - sounds lovely!

Oh, goody! I found a similar idea a few years back in Before and After Easter by Debbie Trafton O'Neal and wanted to do this for so long!
My dh got some power saws before Christmas, and this is the first year we've had a real tree, so the timing is perfect!

Nissa, this is great idea and I love being able to do this together. A friend and I were talking last week about some of these possibilities. She had heard of using the Christmas tree to make a hanging cross similar to what you describe. I had seen the reference in The Catholic Family Book of Feasts to using the tree to make a Lenten Yule log. It sounds like what is described above - it is for a table and has candles. It has 6 candles - one for each week during Lent like an Advent wreath.
The pathetic thing is our tree is still up! I was betting this morning that I'm the only one left. Now to get it down this evening so we can begin the project, too.
Thanks.

Oh good! You're welcome! I love doing these, they're lots of fun and keep me on task for my own projects!
At the end, I'll do a craft along for the girls to finish this project off for Easter Sunday.
We're off to get a hachet at the hardware store in the morning. I was sure we had one...

LOL If you're anything like me, you'll find it AFTER you've bought the new one or the project is over.

Oh don't say that! That's just the sort of thing that would happen to me. OTOH, can you have too many tools? Certainly not with a houseful of people.
...At least that's what I'll keep telling myself.

Stef,
The hatchet is for squaring off and evening out the two pieces of the cross. You could whittle it if you're feeling ambitious, or leave it rounded. Obviously, a plane would work, too. Take care, conifers are sappy and you'll want to keep your tools cleaned. Green, sappy wood can get tricky to work with, too because tools ocassionally get stuck. Take it slowly as you need to keep safe.

Nissa, what a meaningful and manly project! My son is only five, but in five years, I will remember this one.
Gang, if any of you are coming late to this thread, the permalink to Nissa's brilliant project is:
Simple Gifts: Craft Along, An Easter Cross from your Christmas Tree
Perfect, and your little guy looks like a pro if ever I saw one!

Nissa,
Forgive my rudeness of not acknowledging that I love your idea! And since I don't know the final look of your project, I jumped the gun on assuming it was similar to the other craft! You're right, these Lenten Yule Cross or Christmas Tree Cross ideas are for display at the table.
MaryM, we're taking down our tree, today. So you are NOT the only one! Dh isn't sure he can manage the craft...I'm begging.
I love, love, love the symbolism of bringing the Christmas tree to the wood of the cross. I can't wait to see pictures of your final product.

He is getting to be a dab hand at these things! He spends a lot of time each summer making bows and arrows out of things he finds in the woods. He's also eager to try building rustic furniture like this.

We got no further today, ladies. It'll have to wait until the forecast ice storm passes. That'll give everyone time to pack away their ornaments.
