Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My ds (6) did this this morning. Why is it so much easier for him than my 9yr old dd?

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

When Martin was a child, he saw signs in the town that said, “White Only.” When Martin saw these signs, he felt bad. But his mother told him, “We are all great.” Martin went to church to hear his father preach. Martin sang hymns and he told his mother that he wanted to have big words when he grew up.

Later, Martin had big words, too. He preached and learned how the Indians won freedom without firing a single gun. In the year 1964, Rosa Parks was sitting on a bus and a man came up and told her to get up so that he could sit there. But Rosa said, “No,” and she was immediately arrested. So the rest of the black people decided to walk to work, walk to school and walk to church. Martin walked and sang and prayed with them until finally, the bus gave up. They could sit wherever they wanted on the bus.

Martin went to Tennessee to help some garbage collectors who were on strike. We walked with them, he sang with them and prayed with them. On his second day there, he was shot. Martin kept saying, “Do not fight back with your fists, fight back with your words.”

A retelling of the book “Martin’s Big Words”
