My friend caught me after church today and said, "If you come visit me at the farm, you might never see Betty [his wife] again."
"What?"
"She's been in the hospital since the day after Christmas," he told me. "She had pneumonia, but they cleared that up. But she still ... " He couldn't go on.
This friend is in his 80s. He faithfully sits behind me in choir every week. His wife walked around with a long tube connected to an oxygen tank. They gave us a rabbit and made us hot cocoa when we visited last. You know, they've lived long, full lives. But that only sharpens the pain of possible separation. They've been best friends for so long.
It is my hope that she recovers from whatever she's struggling with. In the event that she can't, my prayer is for his acceptance and peace with whatever happens.
Also, does anyone have any ideas of what we could do for them during their trial?

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that your friend is going through this...so painful. I will be praying for them both.

Tina,
Perhaps your children could make cards and pictures to decorate her hospital room. You could bake something or prepare a meal for him. If he is distraught (likely and understandable), his needs are probably last on his mind.
If you are able to, go sit by Betty's bedside to hold her hand for a bit. If he is sitting with her at every moment, you could give him a break. Also, you could encourage some of your fellow choir members to participate in reaching out to this couple.
You already have done something , though. You have requested the members of this board to join you in praying for your friends. May our prayers for Betty and her husband be heard and answered.
Blessings,

Tina,
You could also find out if a priest has visited Betty to anoint her (hopefully this has happened) and make sure they both have had the opportunity to receive Holy Communion.
When my s-i-l was in the hospital last Christmas, no one thought to send a priest to her, even though it was a Catholic hospital and she was in very serious condition. I called her Catholic colleague and asked...and the priest was there within the hour. Sometimes people forget to ask about this in time of great crisis.
You're a wonderful friend to this couple. They're in my prayers.

I'm not thinking of anything specific, Tina, but it sounds like you are already doing what they want...giving them love, prayer, time, and attention. I'm praying for you all.
Love,

What a wonderful friend you are, Tina. You've already gotten some wonderful suggestions for concrete things you can do, so I'll just add my prayers.
