I don't want to talk about the philosophical side of using calculators! (I am capable of quite a diatribe on that topic).
Still, I have to consider that my dc will be taking college math in a couple of years; my older dc who have *been there, done that* advise me to teach the others to use the graphing calculator in high school (not necessarily to use it in place of actually *doing the math*,but to get the skill down).
Does anyone have a recommendation of a resource for learning the mechanics of using one and of practice exercises to become proficient at its use?
Thanks in advance.
Peace,
Nancy

Nancy:
The calculators come with instructions - that is what we used. We got the calculator for our oldest dd after her PSAT when we realized that they now allow, encourage graphing calcu use on these tests. We figured she needed to get used to one so it wasn't foreign before the SAT. Anyways, we had her use it and pay attention to when the calculator was quicker and when her own sense was quicker as she did SAT practice tests. Her dad helped her with anything that totally frustrated her or that she couldn't figure out from the instructions.

My dd16 uses the Life of Fred, Algrebra II, he teaches how to use the graphing calculator in this book. My ds 21, told us to by at least the TI-89 because it is faster, so that is what we bought.
God Bless

Get one that they can use with the SAT - they usually have a list of acceptable ones on their website.

I just had to read this thread, because I'm taking a college math class this semester myself. At age 38, I've never used a graphing calculator. I've been able to borrow someone's TI89, but the manual is over 400 pages. To say the least, I'm envisioning myself spending many hours just trying to familiarize myself with the calculator alone. The math concepts themselves will be another thing!
I work with college students who are taking ITV classes at our local high school, and I see them struggle so much with their math classes. I just want to chime in and say that all college bound students should be familiar with this calculator. . .it will save them lots of time!

Here in Australia, I have been able to purchase a book on problems and exercises to use with the graphing calculator - an introduction to its functions without having to use the manuual!
Here is the link - thee may be something similar at an educational supply store in the US?

I'm glad you mentioned that. . .I searched and lo and behold, there is an entire series of TI calculator books in the "For Dummies" series!

Thank you all so much for your insights and suggestions. I hadn't even considered that some of the calculators would be unacceptable for the SAT, so now I know to look into that. The "For Dummies" books sound like they should be right up my alley!
Peace,
Nancy

I must have hit that second emoticon button by accident. There is nothing about my signature that needs to be accompanied by that winking eye dude!
