Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Why do companies do this? I was pretty disgusted to see this. My thinking is, my 5 year old is listening to the books (both read alouds and on CD), does she need it simplified? The books themselves are not for advanced readers, either.

Any thoughts, anyone?

edited to add--if they just want to add illustrations, that's fine. It does seem that the illustrator they've chosen is quite talented. But why not just reprint the book with new illustrations?

It is quite interesting to see how literature has gotten "dummied down" over the years. Look at what kids were reading 100 years ago -- and some of those same kids were from illiterate immigrant parents....the books that were available had what would now be considered highbrow wording

Now look at the twaddle they push now. And if it's got a movie or tv show linked to it, it's even worse!

Sorry for the rant, but this does burn me up ... it's not as if the original was overly deep!

We actually have the book right now. The 5-yo saw it at the library and asked to borrow it -- but she's only asked to read it twice. I think when the kids are exposed to living books all the time they sooner or later learn to tell what's a dumbed down book and what's not. The Tomie de Paola books still strewn all over the house are getting WAAAAY more mileage than the one masquerading as a Narnia book . When I told her it was time to give it back to the library she didn't complain one bit, which says a lot. If only someone could tell me how to get rid of the Strawberry Shortcake books and videos she got at Christmas.

It's just like what they did to the Little House books...took excerpts and remarketed them.

Stef's right, though...kids who are brought up on living books will learn to gravitate toward Real Literature.

By the way, my s-i-l speculates that the re-issue of the Little House books without Garth Williams' illustrations might mean that someone's planning a remake of the TV series...ugh.

You know, once upon a time kids were considered bright enough to read Dickens and Milton in high school...what has happened? (We had to read Great Expectations in 9th grade!)
