Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I think mine are "O Holy Night", "O Little Town of Bethlehem", and "Carol of the Bells" (Ukrainian Christmas Carol). But they are all so great I just can't decide. We are following a rabbit trail on the history and stories behind some Christmas carols. We've been enjoying some great picture books along with it. For anyone who is interested I have finally managed to post the unit here on my blog though it isn't quite finished yet. I don't know how everyone gets those up ahead of time - I feel like we are barely getting it together.

So what are your favorite carols?
Any great personal stories associated with carols?
Any funny carol stories?

Like these thoughts on a line from O Holy Night posted on Chez Ouiz.

And who was it whose child knew the names of the angels - Gabriel, Raphael, Micheal and Harold? - can't find the blog link.
EDITED: Comic relief from Katherine's family.

And some Christmas carol funnies from Blessed Among Men

I believe it was Katherine's kids, over at A Living Education.

They are so many good Christmas carols, I don't think I can just pick one. As far as renditions go, I *LOVE* Mannheim Steamroller's version of Silent Night.

O Holy Night
Hark the Herald Angels Sing
It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
Oh Come All Ye Faithful
(I guess I like nearly every one, just some, like these the most! )
Oh, and mentioning Mannheim Steamroller, I went to an Advent prayer evening, and the priest played their version of Veni Veni. It was beautiful!

God Bless,

I love "Shepherd's Pipe Carol" by the Cambridge Singers, "Sussex Carol" and then on the flipside of the traditional, I love bluegrass Christmas songs like "Christmas Times A'Comin'" by Terri Gibb. Then I'll admit to buying my children "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer". They know all the words.

I love:

Carol of the Bells (I just learned the words this year! )

Sleigh Ride (I particularly like the instrumental version, but Harry Connick Jr.'s is fun, too.)

O Holy Night (My grandfather sang beautifully and would sing this every Christmas eve. I cannot listen to it without crying. )

In general, I love Christmas music from old England and colonial America.

Carol of the Bells (this version)

Fun Ones:

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree
(With my children) I Saw Momma Kissin' Santa Claus

Religious Ones:

Mary, Did You Know
Oh Holy Night

I love What Child is This, particularly Martina McBride's version (though some words are missing and she uses "grace" instead of "laud").

O Holy Night also always brings me to tears, Dawn.

Oooh, and Mary's Boy Child

And Josh Groban's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring

And not particularly religious or uplifting, but Dan Fogelberg's Same Old Lang Syne

In the bleak midwinter
Sussex carol

Angels We Have Heard on High
Hark the Herald Angels Sing
O Come All Ye Faithful

And a more modern Christmas song that I absolutely love is Joseph's Song by Michael Card.

I love Silent Night. A distant second would be Little Drummer Boy.

Angel's Carol
O Holy Night (seems like this is a favorite hands down, no?)
Ding Don Merrily on High
Hark the Herald Angels Sing (there's a huge descant to this)
Once in Royal David's City
Sleep, Sleep, Sleep

I'm sure there are tons of others I'm forgetting because I'm listing these on the fly. Gotta go!

God bless,
